Who's Side Are You On?

I want to revisit an issue tht I find extremely troubling.  That is the location of the Special Education Department. If you add the IEP's with the 504's, we are talking roughly 3000 of Lynn's 14 thousand or so students. I would bet the department's budget makes a bigger portion than the just the student ratio.

Imagine if you will if the Red Sox had part of their team on the other foul line. It just doesn't do much for team harmony and morale. Not to mention the smaller part of the team will be unhappy with their playing time and more likely to file for arbitration.

  1. Ok - so where is the location of Special Ed Department? How many special education teachers are there?

  2. The SPED department is housed in the old ew Medico building. I don't think there are any teachers there only administrators.

  3. It's 113 Broad Street. New Medico Building. Only administration, some school adjustment councilors, some school psychologists, some chair-people, secretaries - that's it. Really small amount of people for such a big building.

  4. Sounds like the city can save the rent and house them in empty sections of other school buildings!

  5. The plan is to move everyone into one building at the old Ford Annex bldg. on Bennet St. That is a big bldg that the city owns which is vacant and was originally build as an office bldg for the GE union. The city will hopefull sell the Broad St bldg as it really has poor parking and get it back on the tax rolls. This would also free up the space in the LVTI Annex to be used for the educational purposes for which it was constructed.

  6. Is the 90 Commercial Street Administration moving to Bennet Street too? Bennet St. floods with heavy rain and in the past presented difficulties for the Ford Annex with buses. Also, isn't that considered a contaminated land and that's why GE gave it up? It looks like a great building, but is the electrical system able to have over 100+ computers on it? It will need rehab to make it into offices that are appropriate for administrative staff personnel. It's not always as easy as 123 there's more involved like the phone system, electrical wiring, internet wiring, private offices for administrators, etc. I would love to see the building opened and utilized. Parking would be great, but it's not centrally located for parents to access and in rain storms you might get into work, but not be able to get out. If I recall a possible addition or two of drains would be of benefit. Is the land contiminated or was it cleared? That would be ideal if everything is kosher!

    Hoping for the best!
