Priorities?

Does anybody else find it ironic that yesterday that President Obama was at a high school in Dorchester congratulating that school for focusing on science and having 90% of its students going on to college and Lynn Public Schools doesn't even have anyone in the administration heading up the science curriculum? But we have money in the coffers  to fund a new Deputy Superintendent position.

  1. Is that true! If that is true that is an amazing lack of proper prioritization!

  2. Does that same school have a dept. Super? I am not against having a dept. Super in a system this size. I do think however, there should be a number of changes as a result of the new position that directly benefit students, are measurable, and made public. If there are no direct benefits to the students and it become essentially a paperwork support position, then no.

Direct measurable effects could be: implementing community school policies so that these public buildings are used more for community events that benefit the students and their families, increasing interest and involvement by families. Just achieving higher parental involvement rates overall would improve the schools in a dramatic way...

Don't have time to write more, but thank you for all of your reports!!!

  4. Good point Stanley!
Dorchester is doing a wodnerful job setting the bar for all public schools, however, somewhere along the line Lynn stopped trying....now we are asking what has happened and what went wrong...
Well, I think parents need to start looking at the hard facts...more than 5 failing schools, most elementary schools are lacking basic resources, school choice has become a fast problem...no more neighborhood schools...now big yellow buses are dropping children off from all over the district and this is creating an overwhelming responsbility on the neighborhood schools and staff....I can continue but I think you get the picture....I think it is time for new people to come into the system and create a climate of change. Some of the school committee are trying their best...but we need a majority vote...not including the Mayor...

  5. We now know that Administration is reading your Blog...so I guess we are making some progress, but, I have to wonder how many of the ANON blogs are administration.....instead of parents.
As for me, I would love to use my name, but I fear that my child will suffer. So, for now, I will remain ANON...
This blog has given me much information in order to make a much better decision at election time on voting for school committee. I have to admit, I thought a few of the mwere pretty nice people, but I did not do my homework...I have now. I will be voting differently this time and I hope that Capano and Spirito are removed. They do not care about our children. They care about themselves. I have had the opportunity to watch the videos and attend a few of the school committee meetings. I am not happy with what I see and hear!

  8. Sorry - had to delete my post, I caught a misspelling after I posted!

Let the administration post anonymously, the teacher too! Even though this blog is receiving some negative posts, I also see many Lynn teachers and employees chiming in and posting helpful bits of information. I was at Breed's open house last night and got to speak with many teachers that feel like Lynn school system is broken. "Smaller class size," was practically a chant.

You can subscribe to Stanley's blog via Google and select a screen name for yourself - like Jesse did at the beginning of the comment posts. That way you can use your first name, nick name or screen name - you're still anonymous but you'll have an identity. It might bring more faces to the "Watch".

And I hear you ANON 4:37 - retaliation is running rampant. I have filed a complaint with the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights about on going retaliation that my family has received because of my advocacy for children. There comes a point though where we have to stand up, step into the light and demand changes for out children.

  9. Someone has to speak up before there's change. Easy for me to say though because none of these people are my boss.

  10. Teachers in Lynn are reading this blog.We have to remain anonymous because we would be targeted. We are fed up and being attacked from all directions. Our union is unhelpful and our administration does not respect us. Watch the news and you will see teachers are the scapegoat for just about everything. Support your teachers. Ask them what they need. Tell them you support them. If you are pleased with their performance, TELL THEM. Many teachers only hear from parents when they are unhappy. I've held many jobs and teaching is by far the most difficult. Statistics show that a large amount of teachers quit after five years. Ask yourself why.
