Effective March 4th LPS's Homeless Liaison Nurse resigned. They gave a reason for the resignation but I forget. What I do remember is there was unanimity in sorrow over her departure. The disappointment was more than just a personal loss.
Jennifer Spina served a lot of children in the LPS. The numbers would surprise and shock you. I'm sure somebody out there will fill me in on the exact number but even one child is too many. No matter what your political view, you have to agree the child is not responsible for their situation. They are just victims. One day they will grow up and create the society that we are all going to have to live in.
How we treat them now is how we can expect to be treated later, Ever heard of the Golden Rule? I hope this position is filled quickly, if it is not already filled. Not having a place to get your junk mail is bad enough.
We've lost quite a few good people to other school systems this year. They found out they can make more money and they just might be treated with some respect by their new administration. We treat our teachers quite poorly in Lynn. (Think: filthy buildings and overcrowded classrooms). If they can get out, often they do.
ReplyDeleteMy hope is whoever they get to fill the role of Homeless Liaison is going to be someone who is more knowledgeable about the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. I have participated in meetings where Ms. Spina denied a homeless child's enrollment into school because the parent did not have the correct paperwork. Ms. Spina must have forgotten, that as Homeless Liaison, it is her responsibility to collect the paperwork from the child's last school. She must also have forgotten if there is a disagreement of where the homeless child should attend, between the parents and the school, that the child gets to attend their school of choice until a resolution is reached. These poor kids were out of school an entire week while their mom fought with Ms. Spino, Mr. Iarrobino and Ms. Latham.
ReplyDeleteAnon 736, just last month alone we lost not only the nurse but also a teacher, 3 teacher aides, and 4 lunch aides. But we gained an office assistant in the Personnel Office. I guess they needed more help in the administration keeping track of all the vacancies. I wonder how all of this impacts on the budget?
ReplyDeleteAny company with over 1300 employees is going to have a degree of turnover. The key is finding the right replacement once someone leaves or retires. I have sat through 2 different nurse interviews and found that we have been fortunate to have many qualified, caring individuals to choose from. I didn't know Ms Spina, but I have heard many good things about her. Apparantly Anon 7:45 knows of some issues that could have been handled differently and seems to know more about the requirments of this position than I do. Perhaps Anon 7:45 may know someone that may be a good fit and inform them that LPS is looking to fill this position. I know that many aide positions are filled with people from the sub list. That is typically how someone becomes full-time. I also know of some young teachers that have begun their career this way as well.
ReplyDeleteRick is so sarcastic. not professional and not good answers either. that is why people remain ANON. you sound just like one of the administration. change your attitude or you will be voted out by us.
ReplyDeleteI meant that with no sarcasm at all. I am saying that Anon 7:45 apparantly knows things about this position that I don't, I would assume through some sort of experience and if they know someone that they think would fill the role and do a good job, pass the word of the opening on. Holy crap!!
ReplyDeleteI told you Rick leave the sarcasm and satire to me. Go do your school committee stuff. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!
ReplyDeleteRick,
ReplyDeleteTo this Lynn voter you sound like a company man.
