When I was at the PAC meeting Mon. night, I heard things. I don't know if it's true but we will see. Those PAC people are crazy you know. They are claiming that they are entitled to some of the Title I money.
I don't know if that was prebudget banter or what. Admittedly it does make some interesting scenarios. I don't know nothing bout no numbers. But this is Lynn where we fight fair and everything and everybody is on the up and up. I'm sure that everyone will get EXACTLY what's coming to them.
What is PAC? Is it for parents of Special Ed kids only? Who attends and how many people are 'regulars' at these meetings? Where are the minutes posted and the agenda? How many administrators/decision makers are participating or leading the meetings? Are you saying that Lynn has not been receiving Title 1 money from the state?
ReplyDeletePAC stands for Parent Advisory Council (or Committee ?). I think it is a federally mandate arm of the SPED department. Lynn gets plenty of it, I guess the PAC people want their cut. I have only been to the last two meetings. They seem to have more people there than attend the regular LSC meetings. I don't know a lot, that's why I throw things out to get feedback and LEARN.

ReplyDeletePAC is short for Lynn PAC which is short for The Lynn Parent Advisory Council on Special Education - and it's not just for parents of children with special needs though their primary role is to be their voice.
ReplyDeleteDave Ellis is the chair and keeps a record of all of the PAC members. He also posts the meetings at City Hall and keeps the minutes.
Lydia Muggio, the acting head of SPED, and Jessica McLaughlin, the supervisor of SPED, as well as Dan Dill, school psychologist, attend the meetings. Though they blew off the last business meeting but were able to find nine warm LPS bodies to bring to the previous meeting (go figure!). And the PAC acts as an advisory board to the school committee (which is full of decision makers).
I don't think that Stanley is saying that Lynn isn't receiving Title 1 money - just that the PAC on SPED isn't receiving the monies that are set aside for them since they are a State and Federally mandated board.
The PAC can help families who believe their child might have a reading problem (lets say a grade or two behind) but have yet to have found a successful remedy within the school system. They also help families who have a child that might have broken an arm, leg, wrist, etc. find and implement the appropriate accommodation so that child can still make effective progress within the MA frameworks. They also review reading and math programs that affect the entire district; as well as provide trainings on dyslexia, Aspergers, and other disabilities that affect the children of Lynn. Some other their trainings would be great for the teachers of Lynn to attend because they can receive CEUs or what ever they are called.
Geez, Melissa are you saying that almost EVERY parent of EVERY student in LYNN PUBLIC SCHOOLS has a vested interest in PAC? So the fact that they weren't talking about issues that are issues for EVERY student in LPS wasn't a fluke. Well then these parents here just might work themselves into a political force.

ReplyDeleteI recently came across a PAC member. He was a large man, said he was an At LARGE for the PAC. We talked and he seemed very knowledgable about special education. While we were conversing he told me that he was in the Navy and is about to retire. He gave me his number and told me that if I ever needed anything to call him. I ask him what he did in the Navy and he said he's done a lot and he used to train Navy SEALs. I lost his number but would really like him to look over my sons IEP. Do you know this man? How do I reconnect with him? Ill tell you what, if he is on the PAC, I wouldn't want to make him upset.
