THE EDUCATION OF A CANDIDATE

How can I not go? After all this is the EDUCATION candidate. I mean he is all for FULLY FUNDING our schools, right? I just am kind of curious how he proposes to do that, aren't you?

  1. Teachers' Union leader? Hmm... isn't this the problem to begin with?

  2. Not necessarily but there will be difficult questions to answer going forward. Where is the money going to come from? That being said, he will be a very STRONG candidate, given that voter turnout probably be as high in this off-year election and he has a very energized base.

    1. Well actually it is the problem. The reason why the schools are not fully funded is because of the outrageous raises and teachers retirement health insurance taking dibs from the children's budget. He can explain in debates how the union is stealing from little kids.

    2. Yes, there have been outrageous raises but not to teachers.

    3. Priceless. Principles raises & the large chunk is the retirement package

    4. Given the relative size and scope of the raises given to those who weren't in the union he led compared to the ones in his union maybe he wasn't a good enough leader?

  4. Why don't you pick up the phone, "Anonymous" so we can have a real discussion about the people I represent, like teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, clerical staff, school nurses, public librarians and custodians to name a few, some of the most poorly hourly wage workers that we give a voice to on the job. As for benefits like health insurance and public pensions, it should be noted that the employee is funding the vast majority at 11% of their current salary and that the average support staff worker must work 40 years to realize and average pension of 25K a year in retirement. So, the ball is in your court, pick up the phone and call me anytime to discuss my role and how I support worker voice and leveling the playing field against big greed and corporate privatization of public education. 617 974-1243 I am available anytime. Thanks, Brian

  5. People do not realize that teacher retirement is NOT publically funded. Let's get the math straight. A starting teacher at 38k a year with a 2% average increase over 35 years of will contribute 11% of their salary to the retirement board each year. Assuming a conservative life annual accumulation rate of 9%, those contributions would build to over 1.1 million in today's dollars. If you factor in a teacher with a Masters Degree, the accumulation amounts reaches 1.5 million in today's dollars. Unless a teacher works a part-time job for 30 years and make over 26K a year during that time, they will not get social security nor will they be entitled to it. Pensions are paid out by the pension system and are paid through contributions and earnings.

  6. You represent a public Union, not one belonging to greedy private corporation. I don't understand the drama or how it was "well said". Is the drama necessary? This isn't about pension. The payoff is the health insurance budget, the 6 figure salaries. Oh poor teachers!!!! Better paid than any private industry, funded by the greedy poor public.

  7. I got to jump in here. Those six figure salaries you talk about are all earned by the administrators(who I think we have an excess of) who have their own union. The crazy thing is even with the bloated administration staff by the state's calculations we chronically under fund our schools. I say we should be putting the money where the kids are.

  9. It's all about who gets to be called a teacher. For me you don't have to make an appoint to see a teacher, you just have to raise your hand and wait your turn.

  11. I would rather vote for all new faces no matter their stand than any incumbent. In other words: Term limits!

  12. Actually I learned once in a philosophy that Socrates (through Plato's writing) agreed with you as evidenced in his story about THE MYTH OF THE CAVE.
