ST. MARY'S TO BE BARRED FROM UPCOMING STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY?

Due to the Catholic church's very public stance against the LBGT community LPS has decided to prohibit the ST. MARY'S students from participating in a longstanding city tradition. Not really but it is a logical extension of the anti-GORDON argument. So if LPS is really anti-Christian then ST. MARY'S should go too. Yes, Catholics really are Christian.

I guess there is just plenty of crazy talk to go around. Hey, I was wondering about how with the separation of church and state how they are even allowed to participate when KIPP who like it or not is PUBLIC have never even had a representative. Talk about a can of worms.

JUST WONDERING WHO IS BRAVE ENOUGH TO TAKE A STAND NOW!

  1. St Mary's Vision:

St. Mary's is a co-educational, secondary school where all students receive a quality academic experience in keeping with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. St. Mary's strives to form leaders who love God, work hard and are compassionate toward others. We enable our students to develop their intellectual, moral and physical talents to acquire a more perfect sense of individual responsibility, a correct use of freedom and a capacity for productive participation in society. Students are welcomed to St. Mary's regardless of religious affiliation, race, ethnicity, or income level.

"....in keeping with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church." Remind me, what are the Roman Catholic Church's beliefs and teachings about homosexuality?

It also states, "Students are welcomed to St. Mary's regardless of religious affiliation, race, ethnicity, or income level." There is no mention of sexual orientation. Why is that?

Furthermore, St. Mary's, Sacred Heart and St. Pius all refuse to allow same sex couples to be married in their church. Is this discriminating against homosexuals, or is this acceptable because these religious organizations have the freedom and right to their own religious beliefs?

All of those mentioned are private, Catholic organizations that have and should have the right to their own religious beliefs and teachings, just like Gordon College should have. It appears LPS prefers the "don't ask, don't tell" approach. As long as they don't ask other organizations and these organizations keep quiet, it is OK to continue a relationship with them and pretend these organizations do not share the same religious beliefs as Gordon College. This allows LPS to pretend it has and enforces a zero tolerance policy on discrimination, rather than using selective enforcement when it comes to the issue.

    1. With all due respect, this is not entirely true. A gay couple may be welcomed to walk through the doors of these churches, but they are not accepted or respected enough to be allowed to get married in them like heterosexual members are. Therefore, I disagree that the Lynn Catholic Collaborative welcomes, invites, accepts and respects all people regardless of sexual orientation. That being said, since they are all religious entities, they have the freedom and right to their religious views and beliefs and should not be judged by or have action taken against them by a public school district where one's religion should not be a factor in any decision.
