Mayor Kennedy,
It has come to my attention that a troubling incident
recently came to pass at the Ford Elementary School. It seems the Highlands
Coalition was abruptly locked out of the International Garden that we have
maintained for a number of years.
I do realize the concerns for safety do need to be balanced
against any desire for community engagement but the access to some of the
possessions of the Highlands Coalition is not only time sensitive but also
raises questions surrounding the criminality of such actions.
Having stood beside you along with David Gass of The
Highlands Coalition at Ford when the NASA link was threatened by the actions of
the superintendent, I know that you share similar concerns.
Although I realize that there is now a new principal at Ford
and to quote you from that fateful day, “The principal is Queen of the school”.
Still it is my understanding that that the school’s authority ends at that
doorstep and that it is the city’s responsibility to maintain the grounds.
I trust you will investigate this and clarify the
jurisdictional quandary that exists. It is imperative that the proper people be
held accountable in order to direct actions going forward. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Stanley H. Wotring, Jr.
