Dear Editor,
I am writing to applaud Thurhgood Marshall’s recent
activity on the Social Media. Facebook. The school has some sort of fan page
where positive stories about staff, students, and programs have been
disseminated. Clearly this positive manipulation of available information will
do much to enhance the tarnished reputation of this school and increase the
likelihood that the upcoming bond will pass.
However I question how this activity can be directly or
indirectly sanctioned by Lynn Public Schools given the recent public debate
over Facebook policy at LPS precipitated by Lynn City Council President Tim
Phelan who adamantly objected to LPS employees’ involvement in this media. In
fact, Fox 25 News sent a camera crew to record the discussion at a recent
school committee meeting.
Given Councilman Phelan’s documented support of Dr.
Latham at the public hearing in August 2012 about posting the superintendent’s
position to search for the most qualified candidate instead of automatically
renewing it, I wonder now if he is reconsidering his position.
I spoke before the last school committee meeting at the lack
of consistency in the policy over this issue and wondered how it could be
justified that certain schools seemingly have a most favored status while
others are treated as outcasts.
Hopefully this positive and constructive example put
forth by Marshall will encourage other schools to leap into the 21st
century and take control of modern communications technology. This would allow
other schools to maintain a House that is always Open
