A P.O.ed parent has taken matters into her own hands and let the powers that be at the MA DOE (I know it goes by a different name, don't be so picky) know that WE need help,

It is my hope that this email reaches Mr. Chester since he is the Commissioner. I am a Lynn resident and my child attends one of the public schools in Lynn. As you are aware, Lynn is a failing school district (level 4) that has 2 failing schools (level 4) and many of the remaining schools are under-performing (I believe there are 7 level 3 schools). We are continuously told by the superintendent, Dr. Catherine Latham and her staff that there are not enough funds for the many services, resources and supplies our children, schools and district need. We have schools that do not have textbooks and other necessary and required supplies. Because of this, parents receive notices from teachers stating that WE must purchase a list of required supplies. It is my understanding that it is against Massachusetts law for a public school not to provide all required supplies for free. I have brought this issue to Dr. Latham and our schools committee's attention. However, I will have to wait until school resumes in the Fall to see if Dr. Latham has taken any action to stop requiring parents to purchase the required supplies that SHE should be providing. We have overcrowded classrooms and schools, as well as deteriorating hazardous school buildings that our children must attend that have problems such as mold, asbestos, crumbling walls and ceilings, and non-working restrooms. All of these create and cause an environment that hinders the learning process, which I am sure contributes to our low test scores.
Since Lynn schools and district are facing so many severe problems and there is not enough funding (so we are told) to correct these problems or to improve our schools and district, I would like to know how Lynn is able to spend millions of dollars creating and hiring new administrator positions, giving out raises to principals, giving a $25,000 raise to Dr. Latham, and paying the secretary of our school committee over $90,000? I know the state continues to give Lynn MILLIONS of dollars which is suppose to help improve our schools, district and test scores, so why isn't this happening? Where is all this money going to (besides all these administrator positions and raises) if it is not going toward purchasing required supplies and improving our schools for the children? Does the state perform audits on school districts to make sure they are spending all funding they get appropriately?
As a parent, I would also like to know what responsibility the state of Massachusetts has for having and allowing failing schools and failing school districts? What actions does the state of Massachusetts plan to take to make sure that each and every child in the state is receiving the education they deserve and are entitled to? Having a child who is forced to attend a level 3 school in a level 4 district, I can tell you the state is NOT doing enough!! It is absolutely unacceptable for any child in this state and even in this country to be denied the opportunity of obtaining a good education!! As of today, the children of Massachusetts are being denied this!!
I would love and appreciate a response from Mr. Chester regarding this email and my concerns.
Thank you very much for your time
Lori D'Amico
Nice work Lori!
ReplyDeleteKeep the heat on this disfunctional administration, school committee and Mayor!!!
This is just one of a few emails I sent. I urge every parent and taxpayer who is disgusted with the conditions of our schools and district and with the mishandling and misuse of funds by our administration to contact the DOE/DESE and even the governor's office with all your questions and concerns. Hopefully, after receiving countless phone calls, emails and letters from parents/taxpayers of the same school district and city, they will take some action and investigate. We won't know unless we try!! Strength in numbers!!
ReplyDeleteAre you people serious? I was told how ridiculously out of touch this blog was and actually can't believe it. There are so many serious issues that need to be discussed rationally and your solutions are unbelievable. But this one is just plain funny...I live in a million dolllar home in,a suburban community, the schools are top ... We are given an extensive list of what your kids need to bring on the first day ...soap, pencils, hand sanitizer, paper, etc.etc.
DeleteI am glad to supply what I can to support my schools...you people just seem to want to tear at everything and be negative. Put your efforts into more positive thinking... Please...I am an attorney and see these kids inthe courts daily...they need positive role models!
Good for you that you live in a million dollar home and your community has top schools...it sounds like you are very fortunate. The kids in Lynn do not have the luxury of living in million dollar homes. In fact, many of them do not even have a home and are homeless and about 90% (perhaps more) of the families in Lynn are low income. They also are not fortunate enough to attend top schools. Lynn Public School district is a failing district and is one of the lowest in the entire state. As I mentioned, Lynn Public Schools is not providing the REQUIRED supplies they are suppose to be providing by law. I am not referring to the items you mentioned because honestly, those are luxury items for Lynn students. Some of our schools do not even have enough working bathrooms, nevermind soap and hand sanitizer. Seeing as you live in a million dollar home in a suburban community, I have a feeling the kids you say you see in court daily may be quite different from the kids who live in our poor urban community who are in the court system. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and free to post what they want. However, you are commenting on issues and making judgements about people of a community which you are not even a part of, nor have a clue about. Step out of your million dollar home and your suburban community that has top schools and come live in our poverty stricken community and have your kids (if you have them) attend our under-performing and failing schools. Perhaps then your opinion and comments will matter!!
DeleteIf you're not talking about notebooks and pens, what are you talking about (it's not clear)? What required supplies are they asking you to buy that you think they should be providing?
DeleteANON,I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate career choice. You really ought to consider poetry, it's HONEST work. Are you sure you are a LAWTER and not just in the WITNESS PROYECTION PROGRAM and that is why you are afraid to give your name?
ReplyDeleteBeing a lawyer does not make you smart. It just makes you if lucky enough, wealthy or a crimnal. Take your pick!
ReplyDeleteAs we have been reminded time and time again, our Mayor is a lawyer, but really not sure what kind and why she was driving a car for GLSS as her real job! But, here we are now with her being the head of our city! It's not doing much for any of us and our children in LPS.
Lori is VERY clear about the needs of classrooms and the supplies. As a parent and current member of the PTO at my childs school, I have been asked during the course of the school year for supplies....erasers, pencils, tissues, paper and cleaning supplies for the classroom. We do it for our children and to make sure that the classroom teacher has what they need. BUT, where is the money for the schools really going?????? WE WANT ANSWERS!
Take Stanleys BLOG seriuos, because the Elections are around the corner and School Committee members, the Mayor and others NEED TO WORRY!
Our Mayor used to be MY DRIVER. Maybe if I RUN FOR MAYOR, SHE WILL BE AGAIN.
DeleteI HOPE SHE KEPT HER LICENSE TO TRANSPORT PASSENGERS FOR GLSS.....SHE IS GOING TO NEED IT!
ReplyDeleteI bet she could get her staff jobs at GLSS too!
DRIVERS EDUCATION FOR GLSS anyone???????
