LIL' LORI REJECTS AND SUSPECTS THE LANGUAGE ON THE LANGUAGE

  • At the school committee meeting tonight Dr. Latham denied there being any issues with parents receiving interpretation services at the Parent Information Center and she "doesn't believe it" that parents have been sent away and have had to come back 2 or 3 time for these services. She assured everyone that Lynn is in compliance and went as far as to state that Lynn is actually "a little bit above the curve" and that they do everything possible to communicate with parents. Well according to page 18 of this report, Lynn actually was not in compliance with providing translation services for parents of special education students. According to the report, "Although the district does have an established system for providing written translations, a review of student records indicated that when the primary language of the parent is other than English, the district does not always provide written communication in both English and the
primary language of the parent." Now this review did take place a year ago, so Lynn could have taken the necessary corrective actions set forth by the DESE and is now in compliance?? I don't know the answer to that. Keep in mind, this review only checked for compliance with special education students and parents, not those in regular education. Dr. Latham also mentioned her so-called 24 hour procedure, yet to my knowledge there is no such policy on record. It is so baffling to me why I have heard so many parents state they have had difficulties getting these services, when Dr. Latham claims it's a non-issue?? Hmmmm.....I guess all these parents are making up stories. Well once the complaints to the DESE and Office of Civil Rights begin to roll in and if they start to investigate the issue, I wonder what the outcome will be?
