THE CALVARY COMES FROM CALLAHAN

This sounds like the title to an old JOHN WAYNE movie or some spaghetti western. By using those reference you know that I am not just a poor, disabled poet - I'm old too.

Here I was, the meeting room was semi-packed. Of course I had no trouble getting my customary seat though. SMILE FOR THE CAMERA!

Coming over the ridge from yonder there, waving rolled up budget sheets were at least half a dozen angry mamas making up a posse that meant business. I believe if LPS knows what''s good for them they'll circle the wagons or at least put the tables up front in an oval.

At OPEN-MIKE they covered issues from class size to SPED LAW. One mama was packin a copy of some SPED LAW book. I was a waitin for her to take DR. Latham out in the hall for a legal duel. You know, REGULATIONS at thirty paces.

They also were a little upset about their retiring principal being done wrong by LATHAM. He was one of the ones who didn't get a cut from the stolen ( Okay misappropriated but I had a professor warn me once about mixed metaphors). They're angry and I think they're gonna show it!

Looks like my little band of OUTLAWS just got a few more recruits

MAMA, DON'T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE COWBOYS.....

BE ONE YOURSELF!

  1. It's about time parents start standing together and speak up.

  2. This isn't very well written and doesn't even explain the reason for the "calvary." Just my opinion.

  3. Get out of here! I don't believe it! LPS not following the SPED laws? LPS violates more laws and regulations than it follows and we will continue to discover this fact as more and more parents come forward and not only call them out on these violations, but report them to the appropriate state and federal agencies. One of the next violations being reported will be the non-compliance of our school councils. On another note, I received a message from a concerned resident who could not believe that the school committee simply approved the school improvement plans without asking a single question. I was not at the meeting, but it certainly sounds like our school committee, so I was not surprised.

  4. As a parent of a Callahan student, it's as if the School Committee can do what they wish because the current principal is leaving. Callahan Parents will fight the school committee until the very end. I would like to know why they feel the need to change a school that has great scores. Callahan is a great school, with great parents, a wonderful principal (who will be missed very much), and teachers that go way beyond their job description. We all know Dr. Latham does not like our principal and we don't care. He is what you call an old school principal who stands at the door in the morning and greets the children, goes in the school yard to show the kids how to play kickball, involved in every PTO meeting, and every activity at the school. Maybe the School Committee and the Mayor should take a good look at our principal and ask themselves that they could do to be more like him.

    1. Here, here. I only hear good things about your retiring principal. He was one of the three who did not get a share of that raise, aka salary restructuring. He will me missed. In the past Dr. LATHAM has said she has committees to pick principals and always welcomes parental input. We shall see.

    2. Let me explain something, the school committee haas little power or actual influence on the day tto day, housekeeping stuff. The real power comes from the SUPERINTENDENT. Once picked and under contract, that person is golden. To change SUPERS takes real gold because you BUY out the remainder of their contract/ That is why it is crucial to pick school committee members who can make thoughtful decisions about hiring. That is why I helped to hold the first ever petition generated PUBLIC HEARING last August to give our elected officials the opportunity to hire the most qualified applicant. It was the perfect time to seek the best because DR. LATHAM'S contract was up. Instead 4 on the committee voted to blindly renew. Now we all must live with the consequences of their vote.
