STARBARD'S SAFETY CONCERNS SWEPT UNDER RUG

Area schools stress safety protocols

A few LSC meetings ago, LSC member RICK STARBARD stressed the need to tighten school security pointing out a specific lax in the security system at COBBETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. This failure plays out, I would guess in some degree or another at ALL our schools.

The example he gave was when he recently went there, buzzed in, and the door was opened and he was told come up to the second floor to the office. Once inside, he gave the example of what if "I don't want to". A "buzzed in" visitor could wreak havoc.

These concerns were never addressed but the visitor's policy was rolled out Policies and Guidelines webpage. Nice.

BUT.....

his concerns were IGNORED. Nothing was done, nothing was going to be done. TYPICAL.

WHAT'S THE ANSWER?.....

I DON'T KNOW.....

BUT.....

some discussion should have been had. Some ideas should have been tossed around. I guess it takes a tradegy.

  1. Actually I spoke to Dr. Faye, Officer Ferrari and Mike Donovan about this shortly after my experience and plans are are being made to replace the doors at the main entrance so that they can accomodate the security and card reader systems. Visitor will then be entering the building at the entrance by the principal's office versus entering on Franklin St and having to go to the second floor.

    1. am glsd you got some response. I have heard many speaking highly of Officer Ferrari but I do think a renewed since of urgency ought to be placed on this project in light of the recent tragedy. I felt you deserved some credit for being ahead of the curve on this one.

  2. Security...make it as hard as possible for the creep to enter...another words try getting rid of the windows at every school entrance preventing them from blowing the windows out and coming in without even needing to buzz...remember when someone wants in they are not going to be nice, not going to buzz in. Therefore, LPS needs to find a better way of making the bad guy take alot of time trying to get in...this way it will give the Lynn Police time to get there...change the doors to metal covered with bullet proof shielding...locks must be bullet proof also so throw out the buzzer...put a cop in each school - park and walk...try to rotate the cruisers throughout the day to do one hr. here and there on their routes...pay guys on overtime to be on school grounds...every classroom door should lock with a bullet proof lock giving teachers time to get children to safety...put cages in the rooms covered with a bullet proof shielding and bullet proof locks...put an ALL CALL out to the staff from a walkie talkie where the light flashes red meaning lock down immediately serious danger...get a staff to work with GE or some other companies that might be willing to help build these cages...get the governor to put federal money up for LPS to have 2 to three classrooms in a school bullet proof area for lock down that NO INTRUDER CAN ENTER...delay the nut case...what about stun guns for teachers that can be used from a distance to shock the bad guy - get him to run or fall to the ground...mace for all staff and stun guns...lock the rooms up tight, no windows to look into the classroom...shielded bullet proof area in the classroom where the teacher and staff can be locked in and protected biding time...walkie talkies for all staff they are not expensive and some companies will donate...get a working staff to get on the phone and do public relations asking for donations...try Walmart...try Doug Floutie for Autistic population and children with special needs...think it out and get it done...get state legislatures to lobby to free up money...get to work people!
