CAN YOU SAY GRANDSTAND?

Former Lynn councilor: Test teachers for drugs

Where was CANDIDATE CROWLEY when COUNCILMAN CROWLEY was in office? Did anyone hear such an outburst when an arrest was made up at FORD SCHOOL? I guess this" innocent until proven guilty" teacher is not related to anyone that is favored,

I wonder if this teacher will get the RUMORED (so I've been told) FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE) that this person got?

THEN AGAIN

does CANDIDATE CROWLEY favor RANDOM DRUG testing of his employees? The MAYOR used to be one. As EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of GLSS, CROWLEY oversees the RIDE (that's where the MAYOR comes in. She used to be my part-time chauffeur. Small world, isn't it?). What about my safety? Was he as concened about me and my poor disabled friends? I am so vulnerable.

Something funny is going on, the ITEM wouldn't take any comments on this story when it broke and they went dark again in allowing comments on the student weapons story.

  1. I have been reading some of the comments made by people in the Item in regards to this article. It just amazing me how many people get so bent out of shape and make comments that don't even make sense. It is clear that many of them did not attend the school committee meeting and hear Mr. Crowley's speech or even read and fully understand the article itself. I will not speak for Mr. Crowley, but as the article stated, I agree that all LPS employees, not just teachers, should be randomly drug tested. And just in case any responses to my post begin and another huge debate is unleashed, let me add that YES, I think all employers should conduct random drug testing on all their employees and many employers in fact do. It is a safety issue and a liability issue. This of course is just my opinion and I respect the opinion of anyone else who feels differently. As with most issues or situations, one's opinion usually depends on how personal the issue is to them. And some people may even have a different opinion than they once did on a particular issue once they are personally affected by it. I will point out that Charlie Gallo and John Ford both referred to the incident as just one isolated incident. As many of us know, and Stanley just pointed out, this is not the first incident involving a school employee and drugs on or near school premises. Also, Charlie Gallo brought up that he was concerned with the costs involved in random drug testing and a comment was made, which I agree with, regarding his remarks. This administration wastes so much money and is constantly giving out adminstrative raises and Mr. Gallo never seemed concerned about those costs. Yet when it comes to the safety of our children he is now concerned with costs? (Yes drug use, possession, and distribution by teachers or anyone else on school premises is a safety issue)

    1. Back when they debated the drug testing policy after the FORD SCHOOL arrest, I am not sure they ever came up with a CLEAR policy. I am some will say they did. I go to most of the meetings and all I clearly remember is a debate between the cost effectiveness between urine and hair follicle testing. Where does all of this testing stop?

I have a concern about traffic safety. Why not have random driving tests?

    2. Well Stanley, if you really feel that strongly about random driving tests, then you have the right to address the issue just as Mr. Crowley had the right to address an issue he feels strongly about. We can't complain there isn't enough parental involvement and then publicly attack a parent for getting involved and coming to a school committee meeting and speaking about a concern THEY have. If we are going to publicly attack parent's for speaking out about their concerns, merely because we don't agree with them, I guarantee we won't have any parents getting involved!!

    3. Ahh LIL'LORI. Just because he has a kid doesn't mean he was speaking as a parent. Where was his desire to get involved before? Did he just become a parent? Although I think RANDOM TESTING will open a constitutional PANDORA'S BOX, I am more concerned about the opportunistic timing of his concern.

    4. Paul Crowley has kids at St. Mary's, not LPS so he was not speaking as a public school parent. Whether true or not, him suddenly being so concerned about Lynn students after announcing his bid for CAL is suspect. Also if you don't want your remarks to be attacked then perhaps using a public meeting where media is present to talk about your concerns should not be your way of doing this. Freedom of speech doesn't just give you the right to say what you want, but also others the right to say what they want in response.

There's also a lot of ways of being involved where you don't even have to really think about being attacked that don't include going to school committee meetings - so this incident causing an issue for parental involvement is a non-issue. Most parents don't go to the SC for every (or any) concern, they go to the teacher or principal first.

    5. Actually John you are wrong! The reason Mr. Crowley spoke at the SC meeting was because his daughter had the teacher arrested at English.Get your facts straight!

    6. John....Paul Crowley's daughter did have the teacher who was arrested at English. Therefore, he was speaking as a parent. Also, you are absolutely correct that others do have the right to say what they want. It just would be nice if people actually read the article first before they made their comments. My guess is you did not even read the article before making your comment. Otherwise, you would have known Mr. Crowley's daughter had the teacher arrested. I suggest you attend some school committee meetings and actually speak to the parents who address the school committee at open mic about their concerns or issues. I think you will find that they all have already gone to someone at the school and most likely to someone at administration and they were either ignored, which happens quite often at LPS, or their issue/concern was not addressed to their satisfaction.

    7. How come nobody addressed my questions? The answers give you your answer.

    8. I have attended and don't understand why do people think 'being involved' means controlling administrative decisions? Everyone is allowed to be involved parent by joining the PTO or meeting w/ teachers but also going to school committee meetings to share their concerns - that doesn't mean that the SC or super have to go by what people say during open mike. Crowley is concerned that teachers aren't drug tested - great. Doesn't mean that the policy regarding this issue has to change because of his opinion on the issue.
