The Hathaway school was actually a private school (not charter) that closed due to declining enrollment and a low income population that couldn't afford the tuition.
ReplyDeleteThe same people attempted to open the Lynn Prep Charter a few years ago but were denied due to concerns about a possible private to charter conversion which is illegal under the current law (Hathaway closing in favor of the new school). They may revisit the issue in 2013-14 especially with Hathaway closed and none of the newer charter school applications for 2012-13 that would enroll Lynn students focusing on the lower grade levels.
Thank you for the clarification. Our overcrowding problems are everywhere though, I think and not just the lower grades where they definitely are WORSE. Thanks again though.
DeleteAll I can say is shame on Hathaway for doing that to children and families...it's not right to uproot kids and especially those with special needs...only advise I can give is the public schools are always open, not closing, so just work with them...should you run into an issue go to the top and don't stall yourself...only you can advocate for your child...I sure hope people are sending their kids to Hathaway for after school programs or Pre K or K...so not fair to 50 students...don't knock public they are always there and highly qualified professionals who try very hard every day...it's not easy being a teacher things have changed so much...it's about the students and no one else so remember that!
ReplyDeleteCapano, ford, starbbard and spirito were in favor of charter schools. I remember the previous meetings! At a total cost of approx $1300 per student being taken from the public school budget to send them to KIPP or other charter schools (in salem). We taxpayers should be revolting and making sure our money goes toward our children in the LPS system. The schools are in need of repairs, overcrowding is an issue from K and up. We have been hearing that they will reopen Fallon, Washington schools.......taken far to long in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteI am very disappointed in the current school committee and mostly the Mayor!
