INGALLS SPED SHED

After much chest thumping and bravado over both e success of the vaunted EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER and the commitment to the SPED department to place students inenviroments wherethey have the best opportunity for success, we heard tell of a planned MOVE that seems to question whether or not someone should be COMMITTED.

There are a group of MEDICALLY INVOLVED SPED students who currently go to INGALLS where I believe there is a HEALTH CENTER and move them to the EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER.

Sure there are nurses assigned to these students but one has to question the wisdom and appropriateness of the move. It is an INSULT to these SPED students to treat them as if they were kindergarteners regardless of their chronological age.

Although when LSC member DONNA COPPOLAquestioned whether or not DESE would go alongwith such a haphazard movingaround of SPED students, DR. LATHAM assured her that the department wason solid ground. Good enough for me. Have you everknown DR.LATHAM to be wrong before?

  1. The nurses assigned to the students that you mentioned, are just that....assigned!!! Absolutely NOTHING to do with the school health center!! There are TEAMS kids already assigned at LVTI that don't fit the 9-12 model and have been for a few years now, The district informs DOE where we are placing students, not the other way around. Someone that has been on the LSC as long as Mrs. Coppola should know that and a lot of other things that she clearly doesn't get!! Also, nothing "haphazard" happening, just trying to make space for the kids at Ingalls!! Watch class sizes grow with the budget cut!!!

    1. The district may inform the DOE where they plan on placing students, but the DOE ultimately decides if this placement is allowable. Contrary to the belief of many (including Dr. Latham herself) she does not have all the power.

    2. I understand you are right that about those Individuals having nurses ASSIGNED to them seperate from the HEALTH CENTER but there is something to be said for being in close proximity to a DEDICATED medical facility. Hence the number of babies being delivered at home has almost VANISHED.
