A GOOD QUESTION!

I was observing an observation that is plainly obvious. Plainly, yet painfully.

Reading on another site a letter from a parent - I am shocked that classes have over 30 children at the elementary level - why are teachers cut when no one from City Hall is cut? (according to State of City, it was bragged about no lay offs again his year). More than 20 children are considered too many in many schools :

As a mother of a first grader at Callahan school I'm writing about cutting a teacher from the second grade and the 4th grade at the Callahan school this is the time that I kids need the small classroom size it is the foundation for children to fall in love with learning. my daughter will be going into second grade next year and had been bullied all year and still she loves school but putting her into a classroom of 30 plus children being over crowded she will not get the attention that each child deserves.

  1. Lynn schools are a sad sad state. I am parent with a little one and I am moving when he is old enough to start. 30 kids to a class is unacceptable. Lynn is an inner city and like many other inner cities, the schools are a result of the community. Uneducated parents, broken homes etc(hence the way this letter is written from a parent) generally continue on with the cycle since they cannot break it. You can bitch and bitch til the cows come home but the schools are not changing. Pack up and move to a town with a good school if you can.

  2. You are correct ...no matter how hard teachers work, no matter how much $$$ you throw at it , it all boils down to the parents. That is why charter schools are usually more successful, parental involvement and the fact that bad apples are tossed out which public schools can't do. It kids want to learn , they will!

  3. There are 30 kids in the private school class rooms, with no aids.

  4. This letter was an example of an uneducated parent, poor spelling, grammar etc. How can someone like this pass on an example of an education. I am sure she/he is the smarter of the lot in LPS. Not passing judgement, its just there are more uneducated, poor low level workers in the LPS, vs other districts. If people can afford it they leave LPS for better opportunities. Charter schools are great! Most parents in Lynn send children to private as well if they stay in the city.

  5. That is not true...people start at LPS sometimes as student teachers and get hired to fill sudden vacancies. People stay on as long term subs or aides and then get appointed to teaching positions. Almost no one leaves...in 30 yrs in system I know one person who, left to go elsewhere. That is part of the problem, everyone is from salem state, no new ideas, same professors, no innovation. Look at the charters, teachers are from all differentq schools, good schools, real degrees not pay your money and geota degree schools. And money is not the issue, look at private schools they get great young people because they are innovative programs.
