"No Child Left Behind" behind that is. RICK (STARBARD) reminded everyone that this legislation has imposed unrealistic, unfunded mandates that monopolize the education process, forcing teacher's to take too much time teach the test.At last week's LSC meeting he successfully proposed that the other members of the LSC sign a petition advocating the repeal of NCLB.
He was so passionate on his position he even swore. I told him on FACEBOOK he needed Jesus but that I remembered it was a Jewish synagogue and he didn't play that gig.
I think this is redonkulous... The school district recieves moneys from the federal goverment due to NCLB. With all our schools failing and the nations economic situation, where will the children get want is desrved to them? Is this guy smoking crack? Does this make any sense? The city is in no positon to accept this. He probably wants Latham to stay as the super too....
ReplyDeleteClassic Stan, 'Rick Reams Behind' - hahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteBut seriously. I disagree with Rick too. NCLB is the same law that protects all children with learning disabilities or physical impairments. It also ensures that if a school is failing that the students may choose another school (that isn't failing, even if it's in another district) and/or 35 hours of supplemental tutoring.
NCLB is also not as archaic as the School Committee wants us to think it is. NCLB was enacted during the W. Bush administration and while I never agreed with W. as a president I do believe in NCLB. Whether we like it or not NCLB is the standard that we are supposed to be striving for. If Lynn cannot make that standard then shame on us.
I think that Rick made a good point. There is a reason that flight attendants tell you to put your mask on first. You cannot help put your child's mask on if you cannot breathe. Same is true of our immigrant population. How are they supposed to help with their children's home work or read to them for 30 minutes every night if they themselves don't read/write/speak English?
NCLB is just an acronym for UNFUNDED MANDATE. Other states are bailing because they realize they can't meet those impossible standards, and guess what....the feds gave them the $$$ anyway....why not us?
ReplyDeleteThis my be tue, however I beg to differ. Its also about standards. We are not and the people in power are not doing justice for the children. I hold an office within the city, and all I see is it about the politians growing their rep and pockets.
