CLEO HAS THE CREDENTIALS

Continuing her award-winning series of LSC candidate exposes (winner of the 2011 WATCH award) Cleo gives a lawyer turned teacher who morphed into a politician an interrogatory that demanded answers that we deserve. Did we get those answers, you decide.

An Education: LSC 2011 Q & A: Charlie Gallo

By the way here is another scoop for my news hungry readers, the HIGHLANDS COALITION will be sponsoring a debate for the LSC on Mon.,October 17 th. Moderating the debate will be HICO's own, Cleo Hereford. I could be jealous but she does spell better than me and some people might say I have a problem with objectivity. I don't know where they get that crazy idea.

  2. And no he didn't. The question was how could he improve transparency. Charlie answered that he supported what the SC was already doing with televised SC meetings and posting the agenda on-line. But the SC is already doing those things, so Charlie has no ideas for improvement? I do, vote me in. I'll turn SC right around! Ha!

Personally, the SC was more transparent when I was recording the meetings and Seth was posting them on the internet so that people, where ever and when ever, could watch them.

And the SC should be posting the agendas for not only the SC but for the sub-committees as well. And they should be complying with the AG's guidelines for the Open Meeting Law for every post.

Again in summary, Charlie has no improvements for transparency. Will he also have no improvements for the rest of the SC? Huh Stanley?

  4. well said melissa lets talk politics in lynn, charlie has the lynn democratic party running around the city bullying people to put his signs up with cahill. the story they are pushing is that he is a "good west lynn boy". well last time I checked a good west lynn boy (chipper clancy) took this city for a ride. lets not forget that charlie lost in the past with the full support of the clancy regime. he is now using the lynn demo party to try and push him thru. wake up stanley and bloggers. it will be the same shit different day with the good west lynn boy. he has no right to run for school committee, end of story. btw, the elections office is now aware of the bullshit by the lynn demo party members (heard that an 80 yr old woman complained)so they better watch out.

  5. Cleo,

Sure he answered those. I'm not on the same page as him, though. There are many more issues that plague our school kids. Drugs, gangs, teen pregnancy, low matriculation rate to college, low college graduation rate, etc.

He's right about funding but he's missing the boat on the fact that we are just bleeding money. A good friend of mine took the LPS to a hearing to get his son the tutoring services that he needed. Cost LPS $40,000 and then they had to pay another $40,000 for the tutor. Another friend of mine took LPS to a hearing that cost LPS up near $100,000 so that they'd provide his son with back OT services that they lied about providing. He won too and LPS spent more money providing services. And how about how much money Holly is going to cost the City of Lynn? Again, I think she should get every dime. So I agree that funding is an issue, but I think we need to look not only at the money coming in but the money going out.

Sure early childhood education is very important but I don't feel its as important as other types of education. We should be education our ESL parents in English. We should be educating our SPED department on how-not-to-break-the-law. We also need to educate our kids on phonics fundamentals. Children learn to read then read to learn. We are using systems from the 1800's to teach them how to spell and we are using the cheapest reading program that has no scientific research backing. And then teachers recommend the kids for retention hoping that one more year of the same ole' crap will help them.

We're broken. The most important thing that the SC can do is admit that. Yes there is a lot of good. Drewicz has Wilson trained teachers teaching the kids how to really read. Ford, KIPP and LVTI host adult literacy classes. But we need more to be successful, and quick.

I think Charlie answered the last question like a lawyer would. SC sets policy. Is there a limit on the type of policy they set? Can they set policy that could help prevent drop out? How about policy that could raise our MCAS scores. I think they have a lot more power then they know they have. They just need the majority to wield it.

  6. I got to weigh in here. I have a lot of the same concerns as everyone else here. BUT let's be realistic you have to have six people on th LSC. I have targeted the two I don't want. CHARLIE is clearly a politician but that means he can be somewhat controlled. He will more likely be influenced by political persuasion. He's my number 5 choice for a reason. Melissa, you want too fast - where is the money coming from? By asking for too much too soon, you get nothing.

  7. I get nothing? No Stan, your kids and everyone else's kids will get more nothing. My kids are all already on the way out of LPS. I shouldn't even care about LPS, should I? But I do. Why? Because the kids of Lynn are better then the public schools of Lynn. I used to work for a guy, who's wife is a teacher in Lynn. You know what she told people? She told them that she taught in the ghetto. That's what our teachers and administration think of our kids, Stan.

I'm not asking for too much too soon. You're asking for too little, too late.

I'm not even asking for where the money is coming from. Hell, anyone one of the candidates could say "We need more money." No one, mind you, is asking exactly where this magic money is coming from. I'm saying we should be looking at where the money is going.

If we vote him in and lose Rick or Maria we'll be going nowhere, fast! In part, thanks to your misguided push for GALLO FOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE!

You targeted two people that will never come off. Spirito finished first and Capano third. Ford will be out and so will either Dolores, Carrasco or Starbard if Gallo gets on. Yes we need 6 on SC but only 4 of them to vote the same and considering this: the mayor, Spirito, Capano, and Ford vote the same; Coppola, Carrasco and Starbard vote the same. DiFillipo will vote with Coppola, Carrasco and Starbard - that's our 4. Charlie will vote with the other politicians because he is a politician. You see the-wanna-be-city-councilor voting against an incumbent mayor? He wants a seat at her table.

Come on Stan - wake up! You kick KIPP so much you forget to look around. What other school stays open until 6 o'clock every night to tutor, help kids with home work, provide kids with safe activities? What other school lets kids and parents call their teachers until 9 o'clock at night? What other school PAYS for breakfast, lunch and snack? What other school pays for transportation for ALL of it's students? What other middle school is sending kids off to Phillips Exeter Academy? What other school is building new schools so that it can let more kids in?

Lynn is busy shutting them down, and selling them off, and cramming 30 kids into classrooms.

    Gimme a break Stan.
