White Mother Can’t Pull Daughter Out Of Bad School | Newsnet 14
This story is SAD. Why, you may ask? Because it is a distraction from the REAL issue: FAILING SCHOOLS.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. MARIA CARRASCO is the only person of color on the LSC and there aren't that many minority teachers in LPS.
IN THE INTEREST OF FULL DISCLOSURE: My bi-racial son transferred into Marshall while his TWIN sister was DENIED and forced to stay at Marshall.
Oh yeah and another thing, there were rumours going round last spring that Marshall and Pickering were going to exchange principals because of Marshall's reaching the failing schools pinnacle. That obviously didn't happen, I guess do to the slow dismantling of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.
Sad part is when you ask about what the city plans to do about the lack of diversity in the teaching force, they say "who we have teaching is representative of who applies, so..." AKA nothing.
ReplyDeleteAnd we wonder why we have problems
ReplyDeleteWhat do you propose one do to create more diversity in the schools? Hire people based on their skin color? Racism breeding more racism. In this day and age I believe regardless of how a person color wise the best applicant is hired. To suggest otherwise is a shame.
ReplyDeleteAs this article suggests there are a lot of "white" racists in Lynn. I wonder if "white trash" can be added as a minority group to get these people featured in the article their minority status. I cannot help but think if they school was all white they would have any issues. They live in Lynn, move if they want different. FYI...most of these Catholic schools they send their kids too are in worse shape!
No one is saying that teachers should be hired based solely on race - that would be ridiculous. However, as some minority children consistently say that seeing teachers that look like them is important to them, it would behoove the school committee to at least attempt to cast a wider net to attract a more diverse applicant pool. With more diverse applicants in the pool (in terms of both race & gender), there's a higher likelihood of diversifying the teaching force -that's all. It's bothersome that they're not even trying on this issue.
ReplyDeleteALL of our kids are attending FAILING schools. Correcting that is where our focus should be. All of this other stuff is just a distraction.
