At Thursday night's LSC'S MEETING OF THE WHOLE about the FY15 budget, member RICK STARBARD voiced concerns under his TECH hat about the ELIMINATION of key positions in the AUTO and CARPENTRY shops.
The necessity of supervision in the CARPENTRY shop is pretty obvious if you like your fingers. DIANE PARADIS at LTVI personally told RICK, he said that all required ratios would be maintained, "NO PROBLEM!".
Something RICK said about the other shop seemed to be a problem that can't be so easily discounted. You see when someone brings their car in the AUTO shop say to have their BRAKES done or say their TIRES rotated. BEFORE they "car" is returned to the CONSUMER, it has to be ROAD-TESTED by a TEACHER.
AH.....
Here is where the CUTBACKS really most hurt. Sure maybe proper RATIOS can be maintained but are you telling me that nobody doing no road testing ain;t gonna rush back to get into COVERAGE? I've worked in many a situation where ratios and coverage have been involved and seen it sacrificed many of times at the expense of safety. Here is where the SAFTETY concerns should begin.
I, personally had to supervise a DETENTION room full of a dozen DYS type adolescent boys during a school day when I worked at the ELKINS MOUNTAIN SCHOOL. The RATIO was supposed to be 3 to 1. (This were PRE-CANE days and I did used to be a BAD A$$)
#$%& HAPPENS!
