LIL'LORI THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW

.Lori D'Amico Even if the proposed legislation passes, the Mayor will still owe our schools millions because she has been under funding them. We just hopefully will not be hit with the penalties, but isn't that up to the commissioner? Would you give someone a break who has not learned from past mistakes and who continues to under fund the schools even after they were lucky enough to be saved by the passing of the legislation? Or would you consider it a slap in the face and feel they need to face consequences to deter them from hopefully continuing the same behavior in the future? Some of our city and school officials, including the Mayor, want people to believe that the only reason our net school spending is below what it should be is because of the retired teachers' health care costs. This is not true! Even if we were allowed to include these costs and this mess never happened, our net school spending figure was still below the required amount.

  1. Just say it! The mayor or the school committee do not run the show. The Teacher's Union LEADER runs them.

    1. I am sorry if you have a reading problem. Here's how it all works. It's been stated in this blog many times before by many people but for your sake I'll walk you through it one more time.

Only the MAYOR can provide money for the budget. Te School Committee, the Superintendent, or the President of the Teacher's Union do not have power to ADD money to the budget. The Superintendent with the oversight of the School Committee decides where the alloted money gets spent.

The MAYOR does get to where two hats though, that as MAYOR and CHAIR of the School Committee. Depends on which one she's wearing at the time.

NO WHERE does the Teacher's Union get to control the budget. Any monies teachers get is BARGAINED for. Now of course that is another can of worms. Some people might reasonably argue that they are given raises in hopes that they will remember their benefactor come election time. As demonstrated by te latest MAYORAL raise, they too are suffering from delusions if they really believe they are a politician's main focus.

    2. That is the illusion. Did you know the Mayor did not want to automatically reinstate Latham's contract without it going to bid, but it was the Teacher's Union that forced her hand.
