Dear Dr. Latham,
The physical condition of a number of schools throughout Lynn are in a deplorable state. This is a fact upon which everyone agrees. Where there is some disagreement is on the issues concerning how to best address our critical need.
With the passage of the recent 93 Million dollar bond, it appears some concrete steps are being taken to address the problem. However I am afraid it may well be a misstep. This will replace only one school serving only one fifteenth of the student population. Given the dire state of many of our aging schools and even with the most optimistic estiments of futre construction, we can not build our way out of our problems.
You have shown great leadership with your introduction of the FIRST IN MATH on line program and hopefully the power of the application of modern technology. I strongly believe the future of education is on-line and virtual classrooms. Hopefully, you will continue to take the lead in these matters. I believe the solutions to our achievement gaps will not come from shiny new buildings that will be constructed at a snails pace.
PLEASE BE AWARE I WILL PUBLISH THIS LETTER IN ITS ENTIRETY ON MY BLOG, LYNN SCHOOL WATCH, AS WELL AS YOUR RESPONSE, IF ANY.
Sincerely,
Stanley H. Wotring, Jr.
