I received an email today from the DESE. Attached to it was a link to section K of LPS's policy manual. It turns out the DESE does find the policy suitable for fulfilling the district family engagement policy requirement under Title 1. However, it appears as though the DESE only cares that such a policy exists somewhere in writing and not that the district actually follows the policy. This seems to be the case with many of the "reviews" the DESE performs on local districts. They don't seem to be concerned with whether districts actually follow policies, only that they exist in writing. This would explain why LPS has so many policies they don't actually follow. It's really unfortunate because the beliefs, concerns and actions LPS claims to have and make regarding family and community involvement are wonderful!! Imagine how great our schools and district would be if it were all true!! I urge everyone to read the policy. It can be found under the school committee tab on the district's website. It is section K of the committee policy manual.
Welcome to my world. Policies and laws that go unenforced. Paper-mache swords and foam fingers.
