PRIVATE VS. PUBLIC

PATTI CAPANO should be proud of her son. The following caption was under a picture in a spread feauring the ST. MARY'S FOOTBALL BANQUET in a March 6 edition of the LYNN JOURNAL.

Jonathan Capano, recipient of the Arthur McManus Leadership Award,
with his brother Nick, and their parents, Patti and Mario Capano.

No doubt a well deserved honor. But I have to tell you, I am a little concerned about images (being a poet myself, I hope you understand) and I have a little trouble with the vice-chairman of the LSC not thinking that the schools she's in charge of, not being good enough for her son but good enough for the rest of us poor people who can not afford to send their sons or daughters to a private school.

I know I'm crazy for thinking that but I've got this brain damage you see and sometimes the wildest thoughts just rush into my little head,

  1. A little inside info from within. The large majority of teachers, staff, specialists, and support service personnel go above and beyond for the kids of Lynn. So much so that people are getting burnt out and leaving. The problem(s) that make us crazy are usually the constant battles to be heard by the administration about what is working what is not, lack of supplies and equipment and huge class sizes. Every pre-school program in the city is full or over capacity. They don't care.
You do have to give her a little credit though, Nick is a Classical Grad.

  2. How can you fault a parent for sending their child to a better school. Its a personal choice Stan. Religion, tradition etc. To name someone's child in a blog like this is gross immature behavior. Kids are never fair game. Its none of your business.
So Stan should we pay for your kid to go to a private school...is that what your getting at? Move to a better school district if its that bad.

    1. I went to a private college but my parents weren't in charge of running the public ones.

Don't try and turn this into a kid thing. I only speak positively about the kids and their achievements. It's the actions of the adults I want to hold accountable.

  3. I don't see anything wrong with her sending her kids to a private school, I brought my child up in the public school system until the 8th grade and then he went to a private school. He is very bright and I just didn't want him to get with the wrong crowd, it's not about the teachers, it's about the other kids. Parents with kids in private school make sure that their kids do what they need to do and don't ignore the education process. And for those that are wondering I could not afford to pay for a full private education. These private schools have hugh endowments and if your child passes the test and has good letters of recommendations they are going to get into the private school regardless if you can afford it or not. I have another child going into the school system and I plan on doing the same public school through middle school and then off to private school. There is nothing wrong with what she has done!!!!

    1. Your comment "parents with kids in private school make sure that their kids do what they need to do and don't ignore the education process" What exactly are you implying? Do you think Stan has this blog because he doesn't care about the education his kids are getting in public school or the other parents who are trying to make changes in this city do it because they don't care?? FYI...I went to Lynn Classical and some of my friends went to St. Mary's and we had the exact same textbooks and learned the exact same thing. I know plenty of kids of went to private school who barely graduated. The only difference is that my education was free and their parents paid thousands!! Another FYI for you....the middle schools in Lynn are a major issue, not the high schools. Also, there is a huge problem with any person representing and making decisions for the Lynn schools who do not send their own kids to those schools because they themselves do not think the schools are good enough!! How can you sit on a committee making decisions for the schools and kids who attend those schools, when you don't even think the schools are good enough for your own kids!! It is a huge problem!!

    2. I'm not saying all parents don't care, but let's face it the schools wouldn't be so bad if parents would discipline their kids and not blame the teachers. A lot of parents blame the education system when they can't handle their own kids. It all starts at home and I'm not implying that everyone is a bad parent, but if these kids that are nothing but trouble had discipline at home then maybe people wouldn't be so quick to send their kids to private school because our schools would be safe and the teacher's would be able to teach. I went to Lynn Classical also and I had friends that went to St. Mary's and at that time it wasn't any different, but times have changed. There's a lot of complaining, but nobody is trying to jump in and do the job! I've been working in the school system and what I see is totally ridiculous 5 year olds swearing and no respect for adults it's insane. Parents even rely on the schools to feed their kids breakfast in the morning. It's crazy these parents want the teachers to raise their kids when they should be doing it!

    3. Just what are you saying? Your message seems pretty clear to me. It's a different world out there yes, but it's a lot harder to be an adult now. The dichotomy between the haves and the have nots is more extreme and there is fewer people that have enough.

    4. I'm a single parent and I managed. I'm telling parents out there that want to send their kids to private school that it's possible. I by no means have a lot of money nor could I afford to send my child to private high school but these schools have very large endowments and are no longer just taking the kids of parents that can afford it, but instead are taking kids that have good grades, good test scores and perform community service. They want stand up kids money or no money!

  4. How do you people not see a problem with the Vice Chair of the Lynn Public School Committee sending 3 of her 4 kids to private schools? She only sent one of her sons to public schools - the child that needed special services and that was at the tax payers cost.

Why would she not be on the St. Mary's board? Why do you think it alright for a person to be telling the parents of Lynn who send their children to public school what is best for their children but not good enough for her children? I think it wonderful she volunteers her time for the school committee. I just don't understand why she does it.

  5. Maybe it's for the great medical insurance that the city provides.
