Who's The Fools Now?

I got information from my confidential BFF deep from the bowels of PAC that they received a call from someone in the SPED department about missing the last meeting. They didn't they were expected at every meeting. Seriously?

  1. Truthfully the Administration DOES NOT HAVE TO GO TO ANY MEETINGS...in the past ONLY the Director, Supervisor, and who was asked to be present met during the day in the Director's office...I think it was more successful! The Director, Board Members, Parent Liaison, and selected office personnel worked TOGETHER TOTALLY SUCCESSFULLY IN THE OFFICE ONCE A MONTH! It's like everything too many cooks in the kitchen causes a disaster...TOO MANY IN ONE ROOM NOTHING GETS ACCOMPLISHED...TOO MANY HANDS IN THE POT...It's more personal, develop positive working relationships, and if a particular parent had an issue then the Director would meet with him/her and the child...Open Door Policy is more inviting and positive outlook is accomplished! It's a win win for everyone involved! It's hard with several in one room - how do they get to know you or your child? Hands are going up everywhere with questions; just not personal!

Think about it! It will be a true success!

  2. The first meeting of the month they came with an intimidating number with their power point display. Then the second there was NO ONE. No representation. In both instances there was no opportunity for engagement which is sorely needed to move forward.

  3. Actually - they are required to attend one meeting a month, and per the open meeting laws, we (the PAC) cannot meet with them outside of an open meeting. I think these laws have changed since you've stopped working at the SPED building.

In addition to that, Lydia and Jessica were on the agenda. Jessica put out the Connect Ed call - then they didn't bother to show up.

And lastly the PAC has been defunct for the past several years (four or more) - it has come a long way these past two years: The Executive Board of the PAC now runs the meetings, the meetings are not held on school grounds (which means LPS cannot throw us out at 9:00pm), we are a certified board of the city, our PAC was the key stone in developing the 'Guide for PACs' distributed through the Federation for Children with Special Needs, the PAC has lodged successful PQA complaints that have reformed the parents abilities to access their child's records, etc.

The missing link is the Parent Liaison position. It's been TWO years and they haven't bothered to find a permanent sub for the position. The McKinney-Vento nurse leaves and they are able to find a replacement right away! My guess is that we have more Sped kids then homeless children, so why the lag in finding a permanent sub?

Respect is also missing from the equation - from Dr. Super straight on down, Lynn families are disrespected. We need a new School Committee that'll usurp Dr. Super and take a serious, good, long, hard look at what is working and what isn't!

  4. Melissa, I think what you are skinng for boils down to respect for the parents and a focus on the "kids".
