MOLD UNFOLDS - DREWICZ DILEMMA

Drewicz Mold

Almost as fast as mold reproduces, this story developed. I first learned of this potential problem (heck it's not potential it is a problem) from my BFF from a FB post she got from Grandma Tarasuik whose grandchildren go to that school along with my BFF's boy.

Well you know my BFF, she's got all those education people on speed dial and hear from her they did. Even though some of the information she got was contradictory, she did hear back from all those she called - DONNA, RICK, MARIA, CHARLIE and TOM IARIBINO. I don't know if she called OUR MOST HONORABLE MAYOR or not but I know MICHEAL DONOVAN at ISD was involved, so she had knowledge.

Suffice it to say things were done immediately. Walls were ripped out. The nurse's office was relocated to the basement (that may be another issue) and other stuff. An Air Quality Inspector was there and the situation seems to be resolved for now.

My congratulations to the MAYOR and MR. DONOVAN for a job quickly done.

  1. Did anyone bring this up at the meeting tonight? If so, What were the responses?

  2. Stan, it was nice to see half of the PAC there tonight in attendance. The mold problem has not gone away, really, do you think that. There are procedures that should have been done after the mold clean up that no city employee can do. Like verify that there are no spores in the air to harm, not only the students but staff and visitors. Some of the info about this incident is incorrect, just wanted to clarify that. Well, like always, if you ever need a guard, hit me up, you know how.

    1. As we know Mold remediation took place at the end of the summer at the cafeteria. At looking at these pictures and the size of the hole this was leaking well before the summer of 2011 to get to this magnitude. I hear talk that Staff was not to say anything about this by the principal. Was this a directive by the principal and if so there are laws regarding Bullying in the Workplace as well as the sense of responsibility to the Health and Safety of the children, staff and nurse's office. Mold does not immediately vacate, my friend.
I have also been told that currently the nurses office has toxic contaminents hence her having to be moved to the basement. Children need to go to the basement in order to see a nurse? I await the results of the Air Quality testing of today 1/26/12. Still not completed. Hopefully we have an answer in the morning. Thank you Stan...

    2. Shawn, you are absolutely right. I saw you at the meeting tonight and I was quite impressed. You say that you are in the military and on the Lynn PAC. Thank you for what you do, maybe you should run for public office.

  3. Yes, I agree that after several parents from the school called the city and the state an air quality test was done. However it should have been done on Tuesday not after parents discovered that we're be lied to! As far as the nurse being moved downstairs due to water damage and tiles being lifted from the ground she was not moved today but, early this week and I'm the closet down stairs which, is an issue. Also, I would like to add the it's not like they torn down walls today it was wednesday and not by protocol....

  4. Shawn, are you the same Sailor that was at city hall at Veterans Day? I'd so, that was such a moving speech. Maybe the othe Anon is right.... Run for something, you would be a huge improvement to the city.

  5. Stan! You never mess these stories up - sheesh.

The story was that Rick Starbard said he received notification on Tuesday which, and I quote, "We were made aware of the situtation on Tuesday. We recieved the following statement. A custodian discovered a significant mold accumulation at Drewicz as a wall was exposed this morning during some repairs. The exposure of the mold has caused a reaction to some folks in the building which has required the closing down of the star case on the Western Ave. side of the building. Remediation will commence immediately."

When I spoke to Tom Iarrobino and Mike Donovan, on Thursday, they both said that no mold was found. Could this be because mold was found on Tuesday, a teacher snapped a cell phone pic, then on Wednesday the mold infected areas were removed and finally on Thursday the public was notified AFTER the mold was improperly removed?

I'm very grateful that my phone calls were returned, lest we forget that these people work for US. But I am not pleased that this is obviously trying to be covered up. Why would one school committee member receive a statement on Tuesday saying mold was found and then on Wednesday and Thursday everyone is like "What mold"?

  6. Melissa, this post was written late last night. At the open mike you all seemed pleased with the progress. Upon further reflection I posted this morning about my uncomfortableness with the descrepencies.
