Why Does The Postman Always Ring Twice At Lynn Schools?

Because so many of the administrators live so far out of Lynn they can't hear the bell ring.

Is this true? Is it wrong? I can't say absolutely, I don't exchange Christmas cards with any of them. But once again, I hear things. As for being wrong, I'm a poet remember not a lawyer who is familiar with the letter of the residency regulations. The only letters I know about are scarlet ones.

It just seems to me that if these people want to take our money,  they at least ought to pay taxes here. That's just my opinion. Call me crazy.

  1. I agree. I believe not only our admin, but our teachers should also be required to move here. Our schools would be in much better shape if the teacher's and administrator's children had to go to school here. I've heard the argument that Lynn has tried to make teachers living here a requirement but that enough teachers don't already live here and we'd have to lay off too many teachers. So lets set up a plan which includes many steps to notifying the teachers that if they want to still work here they need to live here. Same goes for all of our administration. Too many principals, SPED personnel, etc. don't live here.

  2. Lets notify them now that in a year's time it will be a requirement for all new hires to live here and a year from that date all existing employees shall reside in Lynn. Two years notice is plenty of time to move - most companies give you six months. And if they don't like it: quit! There are plenty of unemployed teachers who need the work. Come to think of it the Lynn Teacher's Union chose to lay off 60 of their own instead to working a 3 day furlough.

  3. The administrative staff does have to live in Lynn - it is the members of the teacher's union only I believe that don't have to live in Lynn although I know a number of principals and teachers do live in Lynn. The Union forbids the residency requirement. Latham lives in Lynn.

  4. PS - I do support fully the residency requirement for the city workers - esp. police and fire - but I know Mayor Kennedy is against it. Especially in view of this 3 years working in the city and getting tenure, they definitely should be required to live in Lynn. Of course for the most part, even the elected officials send their children to private/catholic schools!

  6. Melissa, a lot of what you say makes some sense.

  7. It just seems to me that if you lived where you worked you would have more of an investment in your community. After all the school system is asking the community to make an investment in them. Take a look at the size of the budget to see the size of the investment.

  8. Anon. - I would love to see that list and would hope that I can post it. I don't know the legal stuff but this doesn't rise to the level of Wikileaks sensitivity.
Besides who is going to sue a poor, disabled(waiting for his retirement) poet?

  9. Mary Ellen - I'm a big union person. I believe that they have done a lot for ensuring fair pay, etc. But does the school have to hire union teachers? KIPP Academy has all non-union teachers and they have a amazing AYP numbers! All I am saying is: the more people who work for the city, that live in the city, the better we will all be.

  10. P.S. It's too bad that our elected officials send their children to private schools. I think that is going to be a criterion for who doesn't get my vote come November...Same goes for Kennedy, if she truly believes that our city employees shouldn't live here, then I am definitely not voting for her again.

  11. I am just saying that you cannot force teachers of public schools to reside in a city - the teacher's union forbids it. I agree if they lived here and their children went to the public schools, I am sure the schools would be better. City employees including administration that worked in Lynn before 1998 (or whatever year it went into effect) are exempt from the residency requirement and therefore can live outside Lynn. Private schools teachers are not in the union.

Anonymous - if you want to criticize at least give yourself a real name!

  12. Teachers can't be forced to live in the city because they are state certified. Meaning that if they lived in Salem and took a job in Lynn, they would have to move to Lynn. Then they get a job in Marlboro, then they have to that town. You get the picture?
