STUDENTS FIGHT FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

Coalition criticizes state polling place report

Ford School student Olga Delo-Santos and her older sister Bielma, now a student at Pickering Middle School, would like to see voting returned to their neighborhood. Bielma Delo-Santos said when voting was at the Ford School, students were allowed to go through the process with their parents. Students have lost the ability to experience that and pass it on to the next generation, Olga Delo-Santos added.

  1. Fact check...I don't think Olga' s dad ever voted at ford...for more reasons than it wasn't a voting place when she was at Ford.

  3. Well, just for the record, my daughters HAVE seen ME vote. If they could take part in that AT school, and make it part of the lesson plan for the day, talk about a lesson in being prepared for what the real world is like. Not every child does have that opportunity, either because the parents can't bring them with them, or possibly the parents are not allowed to vote for whatever reason. What better way to teach children about the importance of voting than to let them witness the proceedings, see a ballot, maybe even hold a mock election alongside the adults. and see the importance just a few votes can make. Students can educate their parents or maybe even realize that it's up to them to take part in something so important. Yes, teachers do talk about it in school, but we all know to actually see it in action, is completely different than a lesson plan on the white board.
