MARSHALL STUDENTS TO BOYCOTT ENGLISH

After learning of MARSHALL'S impending LEVEL 21designation due to their STELLAR success in the new FIRST IN MATH program the state's education department has decided to elevate the school's academic ranking.

An eigth grade student was overheard to say, "WT$#%, I ain't going to no ENGLISH, they don't be doing no better than a LEVEL 3."

OKAY SO MAYBE I AM LYING A LITTLE BIT. The point is I expect MRSHALL'S success with this program to be reflected in their upcoming MCAS scores. I am basing my prediction on the substantial improvements shown by FORD and LYNN WOODS SCHOOLS in the MATH scores. When MARSHALL'S scores go up, then what excuse is ENGLISH going to use then? I mean MARSHALL'S doing better than a lot of schools with a higher ASIAN population.

LOOKING BACK, FORWARD THINKING

Looking at the calender, I see it is time to look back at the accoplishments or lack thereof for 2013. Probablyy the biggest thing for me was a failure of sorts. You know e I will spin my loss as a voctory. I am just not sure who was The Biggest Loser.

WELL..... let's weigh in.

On April Fool's Day, I reluctantly pulled my papers to run. I had not planed to run but it was a combination of being disappointed by  the lack of new candidates jumping in after all of the calling for change and the encouragement from ED, my office friend.

Once I pulled them I heard from MELISSA, she said that she was going to run but since I decided to, she would not. She was afraid it would split up the ANTI- vote too much. Never bying in to her negative assessent, I encouraged he to run. The more the merrier. I did warn her not to RUN AGAINST anything but to RUN FOR something. Words she chose to ignore. I thought the idea of a FOURTH VOTE campaign was problematic. BUT hey none other than  long-time friend DONNA COPPOLA pointed out the pragmatic points of politics at the HIGHLANDS COALITION DEBATE. Maybe I wasn't so smart after all, I mean DONNA was the TOP VOTE GETTER for the election. Funny though, everyone was re-elected so even though it appeared she was the most liked of all the candidates apparently not enough people bought into the way to see that her pro-parent plans get put forth.

Proves once again, that MATH just doesn't ADD UP. The electorate, in their infinite (another math term) , overwhelmingly spoke by not voting for me that I should have no limits put on my poetry for the next couple of years. I mean, we have the MARSHALL building coing up and who is going to tell you the truth, unless I a lying

(Don't worry I'll tell you when I'm not telling the truth unless I am lying about that.)

FROM BUILDING TO BLACK LIST

Pickering People to pout profusely
as promises once made have turned loosely.

A new Marshall without a new tax
was the talk, ready to relax?

Promises have been broken before ground,
didn't I warn you the plan was not fiscally sound?

Some may begin to call me a genius,
but wait I say cause "YOU AIN'T SEEN NUT'IN YET"

BUILDING PLANS

Lynn school board members hopeful on Pickering funding

You know people ttarted giving me grief whrn I dared to sound the alarms when Syeve Grossman did the original walk through publically noting how BAD the condition PICKERING was in..STAN, they said, "Are you crazy, ole STEVE is head of the SBA says we are going to be on the LIST. We are moving now."

STAN, YOU WILL BE SPANKED FOR YOUR NEGATIVITY.

And I was.

Then all of a sudden after the election, we were suddenly off the list. But wait could STEVE lead us on"

CHUCK woud have none of this. RICK was pretty upset about this suprise move too cause he has kind of pushed this building crusade pretty darn hard. So CHUCK stamps his feet and holds his breath until we get to give another walking tour. This time we get the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of the MSBA. So he comes and he agrees - PICKERING IS IN BAD SHAPE.

guess what though? We got some 200 other apps that all say they are worse whether they actually are. And well we got this procedure you see and well maybe you just don;t measure up.

Come to think about it, do you think we will be able to BOND another 92 MILLION DOLLARS next year or the year after oe the year after that Don't forget we have two schools waiting after that that were originall built in the 1800's.

Don't worry though we are getting an 80% reimburseent that is actuslly much closer to 60%

Really, honest I am not laughing, I SWEAR,

HONEST INJUN.

NO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

"In Lynn, where 348 homeless students went to high school last year, another nonprofit, The Haven Project, has served as an anchor for kids without homes. Gini Mazman, Haven’s program director, has been able to find beds for some students at the local YMCA and at the Lynn Home for Women, but she said the options are limited."

MARSHALL ARRESTING HOLIDAY CHEER

Several Marshall students and alumni helped out again this year at the Lynn Police Holiday Party for Lynn youth. Mr. Ferrari, one of our grade 8 cluster leaders, organizes students who are interested in volunteering. We're always proud that they give up a Saturday morning to help make younger kids smile and enjoy the day! Thanks folks for representing us so well! Have a great vacation!

MARSHALL MAKES MEMORIES

A tradition at Marshall for more than 25 years, is our Marshall Santa Week! During the week, there are activities scheduled before and after school (and during lunch) to help to make the season bright! In addition to adding some holiday fun, we keep with the spirit of the season, by raising money to donate to charity. Anonymous kisses can be sent and delivered by the original "Mistletoe Mama!" Dress up days, Marshall Pride Day, Hat Day and raffles abound! There is even a holiday mall where students can by affordable gifts for their family. Our advisory groups get into the spirit with a holiday door decorating contest. Here are a few photos from the week.

BACK TO THE BOOK

I started to work again on my autobiography now that my political experiment is all done. Hopefully his little post will get my pump primed again.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF A MEAL

"The City of BOSTON gives FREE LUNCH to every kid, why can't LYNN?"

This was the question MARIA wanted to know. She is aware some kids are going hungry because they want to avoid the stigma of being POOR. You see, not everyone is PROUD of it like me. That's because I see poverty as my mantle. Give me Internet access and I don't need much else to survive.

KIDS though don't have any philosophical shield deflecting their hunger pangs. For learning to flourish, there must be the proper nourishment.

Well folks it's coming just maybe not as fast as originally hoped for. The idea was that BOSTON would pilot it this year, BROCKTON had the option but refused. It all has to do with this formula whereby all of the financial information necessary to fill out the free lunch forms are obtainable by other third party providers of benefits to us poor. These people are considered DIRECTLY CERTIFIED.

When the DIRECTLY CERTIFIED reach a certain level then it becomes cost feasable to give everyone free lunch. From what I gather this was supposed to hit LYNN maybe next year.

BUT....

the expansion of this program statewide may be on hold because of TITLE 1 TANGLES.

It is easy to get hungry nut no one said it was easy being poor.

This year we are trying ‘Adopt A Family’. Each cluster will adopt a family in need (anonymously) and bring in toys, clothes, gift cards, etc. East Boston Savings Bank, our business partner, will be sponsoring a family as well.
We will collect gift cards, money, clothes, toys, etc throughout the week up until Friday morning. Then we will deliver to the families. This is the first year that we’re trying this – we hope it will be a great success. Thank you for all your help and generosity.

VACATION CANCELLATION

Once again a regularlly scheduled LSC meeting got CANCELLED. Well what scrooge is going to begrudge a day after Christmas cancellation?

I know what you're thinking. My mother says you shouldn't talk like that about me!

The fact of the matter is that CHRISTMAS comes roughly on the SAME day every year and we have enough time to schedule around it without going without meeting. The same thing every year around THANKSGIVING too.

We really should do a better job of getting our money's worth out of our ELECTED officials. Education is too important to be put on auto-pilot.

Besides this is NEW ENGLAND, there can occasionally be snow giving another reason to cancell meetings. Remember a couple of years ago when we had all that snow? I was running out of material. I had to make stuff up. I know how was that any different from any other time?

LOOK CLOSELY AT THE LABEL

A request from the LYNN TEACHER'S UNION was approved at Thursday night's LSC meeting for PHILIPP MCQUEEN to participate in an AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS EDUCATOR EDUCATOR CADRE Jan 21 and 22.

When I first saw this I thought it said CABARET and I figured with our fine music department he had a good chance at winning the competition. Alas my cataracts once again led me to the wrong conclusion. Oh well, I hope he shares his performance when he returns.

LVTI NAILS DOWN SOME DONATIONS

The CARPENTRY program at LYNN TECH got a generous donation from J. C. W. CONSTRUCTION of  $1200 worth of CORIAN product. Thank You and Good Deal.

Now we here at the WATCH would not only like to acknowledge and thank the DONOR.....

BUT......

we would also like to thank the person responsible for securing that donation.

Was it that FULL TIME grant writer at around $60,000 or that PART TIME private partnership person at somewhere between 20 and 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS per year?

FALL-OUT OVER FALL DOWNS

I just saw on FACEBOOK where another kid fell at school (this one INGALLS, the last time SISSON) and the parent wasn't properly notified. Oops my bad, that was at SISSON wear the parent wasn't properly notified about the seriousness of the accident. Looks as if this INGALLS parent wasn't even callled.

fell in School never notified like it was nothing its a compound fracture...how da go INGALLS SCHOOL VOTED #3 FOR BEST SCHOOL OH YA RITE......

Well accidents do happen....

BUT.....

c'mon now!

SCHOOL COMMITTEE SAYS "YES" WE'LL TAKE YOUR STUFF

At Thursday night's LSC meeting, the members voted to approve the accepting of a donation of some office furniture from the parents of two SEWELL-ANDERSON students. Details were not given about exactly which specific pieces we are talking about nor who the generous benefactors were.

GO WEST YOUNG MAN AND LADIES, TOO

Things are looking up out in that end of the sports world. I mean you have the WEST LYNN Pop Warner team who played for a chance at the NATIONAL TITLE and the approved CLASSICAL'S girls softball team's field trip over spring vacation to play in some tournament in DISNEYLAND The girls raise all expense for the trio through various fundraising activities.

Once the fund drive starts someone please let me know when because we here at the WATCH would like to help get the word out

THREE CHEERS FOR CHUCK

HIP, HIP HOORAY!
HIP, HIP HOORAY!
HIP,HIP HYPOCRIT!

This post is going to put me in the uncomfortable position of seeming to defend CHARTER SCHOOLS but given the nature of this post  I'll just say I learned to talk out of both sides of my mouth like my political idol. Remember now I did run for office. Well anybody who has seen me walk knows it was more like a LIMP. No matter, I learned somethings.

Like last night at the LSC meeting, you got to LOVE how CHUCK portrayed himself as a CHAMPION OF PUBLIC EDUCATION fighting off the institutions with a charter who are by STATUE a public school. Now one could argue philosophically about the degree of publicness but when push comes to shove it's in BLACK and WHITE. It's the law and however unsettling it may be its settled, settled law. Pardon me for a minute, what's CHUCH'S degree again in? Did you say horticulture because he is spreading the manure on pretty thick.

You see CHUCK and me we got something in common No it ain't SMARTS because he is more educated than I be You see we both have chosen to spend time in PRIVATE schools. Me I did go to WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE after I went to a PUBLIC high school (where I might add I was the first of THREE alumni to winthe FRESHMAN CHEMISTRY AWARD for three years in a row)

On the other hand, CHUCK didn't go to a PUBLIC high school,

Class of 2001 · Lynn, Massachusetts

You know, there is nothing WRONG with that. It's a choice one makes. I mean ST. MARY'S is a good school if you can afford it. I might be wrong, but I don't think CHUCK won no basketball scholarship. Call me crazy, I ust think we should be spending more of our time studying why CHARTER SCHOOLS exist and less time on inconsequential POLITICAL THEATER.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

LYNN CITY COUNCILMAN RICH COLUCCI had expressed concern  over the waste at the luch table. I know it's hard to believe but...SOME KIDS AREN'T EATING THEIR VEGETABLES and some fruits too! The idea was to send the lefftovers to MY BROTHER'S TABLE or some local food pantry. A NOBLE idea.

BUT......

they found out it costs to care. You see there are logistical problems and refridgeration complications. LSC member COPPOLA comes to the rescue. She wanted to know why we couldn't give it to our own people - the kids at school or their parents.

It turns out some schools already have a SHARING TABLE where kids can put their unopened, untouched leftovers for others. The plan going forward is to make it uniform at ALL the schools and formalize a form (release) for the parents

BREAK-IN AT ABORN. WILL LPD BE NOTIFIED?

Santa told me that the elves were hard at work overnight getting everything just right for the Holiday Fair. He also said he wanted all the students and helpers to to have a wonderful time today.

HOLY PILGRIMAGES AND HUMBLE PIES

Aw shucks, I don't deserve it. Really,,,,,Well...........You know what I'm talking about. FORD SCHOOL is been APPROVED to take a PILGRIMAGE to my BIRTHPLACE Yeah they are going june 1-3. 2014.

I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't heard it but when DR. LATHAM was asked for her opinion"I so recommend.".

CONSTRUCTION CONSPIRACIES

Does anyone else thinks it's a little funny that sound goes out in the Internet broadcast of the LYNN SCHOOL COMMITTEE meeting just a little before the monthly report on the MARSHALL progress. I guess that's par for the course. If nobody hears you say things then you don't have to explain things later.

LIKE...

Why PICKERING was pushed out of the PIPELINE?

I believe that PROMISE was made to WARD 1 voters.

How come LSC member MR. STARBARD floated the idea of the old/current MARSHALL being used as an EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER?

I bet  I'll here from him on this. Even we disagree and we do, RICK always stands tall and tells me why        he is wrong.

I mean why if the building is TOO bad for MIDDLE SCHOOL kids, why would it all of a sudden to be        safe for the little ones? And then there is that $4+ mill they budgeted in the BOND for that IMMEDIATE      demolition of the school. Remember that?

ABORN AFFAIR

DON'T FORGET: Holiday Fair is tomorrow. There are lots of presents for your little ones to buy for that special someone. It's the most wonderful time of the year, to quote Andy Williams.

DOMINANT TRICKS ANYONE?

Looks like we got changes coming to the DISCIPLINE CODE around the use of CELL PHONES and SHIRTS being TUCKED IN.

Funny though the changes will come in PHASES and also there  was concern about having the changes printed up in the STUDENT HANDBOOK. Back when the DRESS CODE was changed to allow shorts to be worn - THE CHANGE WAS IMMEDIATE!

ALL YEAH, THE SOUND IS GOOD ON THE BROADCAST TONIGHT!

CATCH UP ON THE CONGRATULATIONS

The WATCH would like to thank LPS administrative Secretary MARGRET HINES who will be retiring after more than 50 years of service at the end of the year. Years of students owe you their gratitude.

Someone correct me if I am wrong and there are quite a few of you out there who take great joy in highlighting my flaws, but I think MS. Hines was the typist on the manuscript for a book, THE HISTORY OF LYNN published by LPS and the school committee SEVERAL years ago. I remember reading a copy a few years back when I volunteered in the library at FORD. This should be rquired reading for ALL our elementary kids.

Everybody needs to know where they came from, never forget, and BE PROUD!

I mean, everybody can't be an ignorant hillbilly like me

"DINERS, DRIVE-INS, AND DIVES" TO FEATURE NEW BENNETT ST CAFE

Lynn is becoming known for nice restaurants We got all those shows going at CITY HALL/ Movies and concerts, we got it going on downtown. Why should the local businesses corner the market.

National attention is coming to the local foodie revolution The newest hot spot catering to those precocious palates of LPS administrators. I hear a trendy dunung establish is being provided by CHARTWELL, the provider of all those tasty lunches provided to our students

When LPS was at COMMERCIAL STREET, the students at TECH had their little restaurant in the building It was a win-win No one had to brown bag it and the students got to gain valuable experience while keeping up with the cirriculum Slave labor never sounded so good.

Now with the consolidation of the administration, a new opportunity has opened up. Can we expect these professional people to brown bag it? Although the same bags to carry their lunches in could be used to carry their cash out. They do be getting some extra helpings of pay thanks to your generous tax dollars

I do wonder though who is paying for this perk. Well maybe they pay, I don't imagine any of them wualify for FREE lunch. Are there any financial transactions to track? Plus, was there an OPEN BIDDING process for  this culinary club. Who knows, maybe I would have rented a FOOD TRUCK and went into business. I mean, I might have wanted to belike my idol and serve GREEN EGGS AND HAM!
