If the Mayor had been on time, it would have been largely unnoticed. Since she was, JOHN FORD stepped up and read the obligatory preamble opening up my remarks at OPEN MIC. PATTI as vice chair of the LSC usually has that honor. I must say JOHN did quite well and there was talk of PATTI losing her job at the microphone.

PATTI "NO-SHOW" CAPANO TO LOSE JOB?
I can't believe I waited this long to report this but I guess I got caught up in the storms, you know snow, spending, and otherwise. Anyway PATTI CAPANO was absent from the LSC meeting last Thursday. I'm sure she had a good reason but I don't know what it was and I didn't even hear any scuttlebutt.

I am new to Lynn schools as my child is only in first grade. I was recently told about your blog and started reading the posts. I am shocked to find out about the financial crisis. I had no idea schools were so under funded and I cannot believe the decision is made by the Mayor and Mayor alone. That is a great deal of power for only one person to hold. Why doesn't the city council make decisions about financing the schools? Isn't that their responsibility? It was also disheartening to read that the Mayor is repeatedly late for school committee meetings and that members do not attend them all. They are elected by the people of Lynn to represent the schools and students and if I am not mistaken, they are compensated for their position. How are these things able to go on in a large city like Lynn and why aren't the majority of parents and taxpayers infuriated by them?
ReplyDeleteYour correct about about the centralization of power. Although they are sort of like independent branches of different government both school committee members can take away from the budget or may move monies around from line to line, they can NOT add to the budget. That is the Mayor's prerogative and it comes from the charter.
ReplyDeleteAs far as attendance and timeliness, usually everyone does show up, for the regular meetings anyway. Now when it comes to the subcommittee meetings usually held before the reg meetings, the Mayor rarely is there. Since as chair of the committee as a whole, she is not on any of the three member subcommittees. Usually though all LSC members attend all the subs even though they may not have a vote on a particular sub. The reason being that import information is shared needed for them to make an informed decision when they cast their vote at the regular committee meeting. The Mayor almost never goes to those subcommittee meetings yet cast a vote on what was discussed. Half of her $150,000 salary is compensation for work in the schools. You would think for that much money she could put in a couple more hours a month and attend those meetings.
