.Well the MAYOR who is as you know CHAIR of the LSC told the committee that normally she wouldn't have allowed the item on the agenda since the decision is not in their purview but since there are two new members she went over the protocol and explained all of the factors that go into the determination. JUDY had what I perceive to be an almost patronizing tone. Then again, I may not be the most objective person here.
Reasons like the need for child care, lack of a parking ban and other factors, all the while failing to address the concerns that LORRAINE had which was the need for SAFETY and why if all of the surrounding districts made the call the night before that LYNN didn't.
LORRAINE said her phone was ringing off the hook.DONNA COPPOLA also reported getting numerous calls from parents some of whom reported that when they call the administration office they were told DR. LATHAM was NOT taking calls This was vehemently denied by DR. LATHAM so if it is true I would hope that someone who has had experience with this chime in.
In the end, LORRAINE said she was only interested in STUDENT SAFETY.
The Mayor is mistaken. The school committee does have a say in matters such as this, and many more. The problem is the LSC (Mayor included) gives the super too much power because they are unaware of their own as school committee members. Remember, the super is employed BY the school committee; not the other way around.
ReplyDeleteI believe she was referring to the "day to day" operations. I agree with you that the LSC cedes to much power.
DeleteThere is no state law that states the super has sole authority to make decisions about holding school or not during inclement weather.
ReplyDeleteStatue or not, parents act on their perception of the law and they will end up holding the SUPER accountable.
DeleteWell in this case it is the super who is responsible because she is the one who made the decision to have school. Going forward however, the LSC should be the ones to make that decision.
