A Rose By Any Other Name!

Last night just before the closing of the LSC meeting I observed and was offended by the shallow and degrading remarks made by LSC member Patricia Capano to fellow LSC board member Maria Carrasco. While asking about the rumored dismantling of the "machine shop" program at one of the schools, Ms. Carrasco expressed her concern because of the valuable opportunities this program has provided. Dr. Latham  tried to assure her that the program and its machinery were intact

After Dr. Latham's assurance, Ms. Capano laughed, saving she loved Ms. Carrasco's pronunciation of "machine" and asked if she would repeat it for her further amusement. Ms. Carrasco exhibited a great deal of class by refusing to acknowledge what amounted to a racial slur.

I am by no means a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. I don't even like Judge Judy. However over the years after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's nomination, I have been subjected to numerous trainings on what constitutes sexual harassment. From what I have been taught you do not have to receive direct harassment for a violation to occur, You just have to observe and be offended, that constitutes a violation.

A reasonable man would think that ethnic and cultural discrimination would rise to the same threshold. As I said earlier, I am not a lawyer but I was offended.

  1. So do you sue her? What are the damages? An ego.

  2. If our leaders are going to exhibit that kind of blatant racism, how do we expect our citizens to come together.

Wasn't this a charge of Mayor Kennedy's in her inauguration speech.

If this truly did occur, Mayor Kennedy should have laid a smack down on Capano.

Similar actions, lost Clancy a few votes.

  3. Considering the diversity of our student population, Capano's comments were outrageoous. I've been to all the recent meetings. With the new bullying policies being enacted, a student could potentially be turned over to the District Attorney for those comments. Think about the examples we are setting.

  4. Thats the really scary part a student could be turned over to the DA for something this stupid. Hopefully nothing would become of it. People are jerks and these kids and grown ups need to deal with it. The Lynn schools are so for shit this is the least of their worries. Come on! Pick your battles.

  5. O-M-G you do not have a right to not be offended!

Fortunately it is not illegal to be a jerk.

You libs want to manage people's thoughts. You can't. If an elected official says something stupid, vote her out of office. Don't:

    A. Micromanage speech
    B. Pretend that "ebonics" is legit - it is just bad grammar.
    C. Constantly play the race card - libs are usually the worst offenders as you use race as an excuse for terrible things - like people misbehaving, breaking the law, stealing money they didn't earn.

You and your ludicrous attitudes offend me to my core - therefore I should be able to press charges! I am truly offended, whether or not you think I should be. Should I therefore have the right to prosecute you? That seems to be your central theory.

  6. You are right. Stupidity is not a crime otherwise our jails would be full and much of our airwaves silent, This is not a conservative versus liberal issue. It is one of basic respect and human dignity.

Look at who is playing the race card. It's not Carrasco and she was the one most victimized. Capano was the one who in your words, said something :stupid" and was a "jerk".

Now you try to twist the truth until it conforms with your perspective. People who hold elected office must be held to a higher standard.

  7. The internet has provided and outlet for people who the world should and would of ignored to voice their sputterings.
Do you pay taxes? (Not the ones you pay on your smokes or lottery tickets). Do you pay property taxes, income taxes? Have you any clue how things work? The fact that you are making mountains of mole hills proves your ignorance. The simple fact your making this an issue when the school system in shambles is silly,.

  8. Though I would agree that the remark was racist, if that's what she truly said, you've got to pick your battles. This is the type of offhand remark that makes me think the offender doesn't know any better. I classify this as ignorance. It is offensive to me, but if focussed on too much it will only be a diversion, a sideshow. By the way, ebonics has nothing to do with this, so why throw it in?

  9. I was not there I am just going on what you blogged about. Again what is even the validity of your claim?
"Now you try to twist the truth until it conforms with your perspective. People who hold elected office must be held to a higher standard." your own words. Have them for breakfast or offer them up to the 98% of the students on the free lunch program! Disgusting all of it!
