$125,000 for an election to decide nothing?
Whoa! I got mixed feelings here. A meaningless election is the only one I ever won. Are we really thinking about depriving some candidates of that one time sense of victory? Will there be a need for fewer fundraisers?
I think they're not thinking this through. Think about the economic impact on the local bars and restaurants. Then there are the printing companies. Although when I ran, it didn't cost me any additional money to run in the primary because well I didn't spend any money in either. To be honest there was the cost of my homemade sign (I had to pay the artist who made it but state law says I have to feed my son anyway {He works for food}).
Still I do have to admit, having a pointless election does seem like such a waste, especially given the dire financial conditions the city is actually in, however different the MAYOR wants to spin it. What I want to know is who would get to spend the savings and given state law is this even legal?
As far as the legal question goes, the city of LYNN has shown in the past a willingness to break the law. I'm thinking in particular of the NET SCHOOL SPENDING problem.
