Before You Sign On The Dotted Line

Someone please educate me. I have made it clear I am not in favor of charter schools. I have a lot of reasons that I'll go into later  if anyone cares. But, I could be wrong. After ll, I'm in my fourth marriage so I have a track record of being wrong.

If charter schools are so great and they have the best interest of the students in mind, why doesn't KIPP jump at the chance to locate at the Bennett St. location? I mean they could be up and running in no time. Why didn't the city make a more attractive offer, any offer? Our elected officials are supposed to be looking out for us, right?

Are they looking out to profit our students or themselves? Like they say on TV - "You Be The Judge."

  1. 1. The city would not let the KIPP people have Bennett Street - it is to be used by the school administration. KIPP requested the location as I remember but the city said no.

    2. As a believer in education for the total child, I believe in choices. Children all come with different requirements and what works for one does not work for all. Not everyone can afford to send their kids to private schools.

    3. Only in Lynn do people have a problem with a school being in a scenic beautiful location. Schools should provide a view, an open field and green around it.

    4. Charter schools offer much the Ford School offers - why shouldn't more children in Lynn have the opportunity to experience it?

    5. Charter schools are a temporary remedy for a good education in cities with low performing scores. When the city is performing at a satisfactory level, the state will be closing them and converting many of the premises of the schools to the public schools.

After I see "Waiting for Superman" which is playing currently in Salem, I can add to this list I am sure.

Who prefers an old VFW bar to a decent school choice for Lynn kids?

  2. People can drink anywhere, the bar is not the issue. High Rock Tower is.

Now there is talk of Bennett St. being turned into a parking lot for food trucks. Where are our priorities?

  3. Only in Lynn will people stand up to protect important places :)... (well I wouldn't be so rude to say that. People stand up to protect important places everywhere in the world)

No one is against school programs or giving children good views. This can be done anywhere. This site is not a great fit for a school field, drive, among other things.

People do have choices for education. They can sign up for the charter school in the location it is currently at, or in other towns.

  4. Funny that the Ford School is touted as a success. Last I looked out my window, it;s wasn't what I would call a picturesque view.

It is the educational model, the principal, the teachers, and the community that makes it special. You don't build that with concrete or all the fanciest electronics in the world. It;s all about people.
