I BELIEVE THERE IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED HERE!
For all the talk about the evils of charter schools, and hey I admit to preaching from this pulpit, you do have to ask yourself what is key to their success politically. Well not only are they serving a community school for their select community but they are responsive to the outside community as well.
After a couple of neighbors complained to their councilman about trash and traffic problems caused by KIPP and were told them to file a "variance" and well you know how fast the wheels of city justice are. They have their own traffic problems.
DAVID GASS, Director of the HIGHLANDS COALITION offered to intercede on the neighbors behalf and talk directly to the people at KIPP. Now DAVID is not as warm and fuzzy as me but within days he got a response from HUGO CARVANAL, Director of FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, with promises of specific steps to be taken and an offer to work together.
PROBLEM SOLVED! Well maybe not, promises are not solutions. As it happens, the way it happens it may not actually happen. You know how stuff works but the rapid reaching out and engaging will make everybody feel better even if nothing gets done.
