TIME TO GET SERIOUS!
You already know I disagree with you about Natasha's support of charter schools. There are school districts in this country that do collaborate with charter schools and I am pretty sure they receive funding for doing so. LPS does not collaborate at all with KIPP because the decision is the superintendent's to make and Dr. Latham does not allow it. This could all change when there is a new superintendent for LPS in the future. Parents who send their kids to KIPP are Lynn voters too and if KIPP continues to expand like it has been, there could be a lot more charter school supporters casting votes at election time in the near future. Most parents do what is in the best interest of their children and if that means sending them to a charter school because the public school district is not or cannot provide the environment, services, and resources those children need to be successful then so be it. I think Natasha's experience as a parent with children in both KIPP and LPS is a great asset for a candidate to have and good for her for supporting and advocating for both!
That being said, they are going after the same chunk of money. The two will not exist harmoniously. That being said we can LEARN from if not work with. remember, as a matter of law, the LYNN SCHOOL COMMITTEE has NO jurisdiction over KIPP or any other charter. It would NOT her job to advocate for them.
If elected, she would not have jurisdiction over KIPP, but she would over LPS. Therefore, she could advocate for a working relationship between the two if she felt it would be beneficial to LPS and its students.

ReplyDeleteNo doubt that being hostile toward them alone is not productive. I just have questions on her grasp of reality as wekk as DR. LATHAM'S on this matter.
DeleteA working relationship while KIPP feeds off of Lynn's Chapter 70???
