John Ford brought back up concerns about the wisdom of having the schools open on any election day. He had cited a couple of examples of in the past where this voting had provide cover for acts of abuse. Granted none of them were in Lynn but they do give one pause to think.
This was not the first time JOHN has raised these concerns. He felt there is a real safety concern and it just didn't make good sense that LPS has spent all this money on cameras and security upgrades to turn around and throw caution into the wind a couple days a year. Someone could easily slip by the policeman at the polling places to hide out and create havoc later. Other members share his concern but yet were unwilling to cancel additional school days in an already tight calendar.
A compromise was reached when it was agreed that additional officers would be added. When asked who would be paying for this additional officer Dr. Latham said that the city pays for that. It should be noted however, that the MAYOR, who actually writes the check was not present for this discussion in subcommittee. We shall see pretty soon.
This is priceless. The school committee voting to spend city funds without city council or Mayor approval.
