ON THE MEND?

It's almost budget time again
Yet still no answer for our past sin.

Laws the city did break not bend
To the schools, the Mayor's no friend.

  1. It's amazing how a city that has not met their net school spending obligations for the past 5 years (and will not again this year) claims to have the funds not only to pay their share (over $40 million) of the $91 million bond to build the new Marshall, but claims to also have the funds to pay for a new Pickering. Let us not forget the abundance of raises that continue to be given to those on Bennett Street. Meanwhile, most, if not all, of the existing school buildings in the city lack textbooks in the classrooms, books in the libraries, and properly working smartboards and other technology throughout the buildings because the city claims to not have the funds for these things. Therefore, should residents of Lynn expect the shiny new classrooms and shops the administration brags about to have empty walls, bookshelves and tool boxes?

    1. I think this is a valid concern. To my knowledge, and I may be incorrect, the middle schools do not currently have working shops like they use to. Therefore, with the building of the new shops in the new Marshall and most likely future schools, comes the need for new equipment, materials and teachers for these shops. These are all expenses the district currently does not have, correct? Therefore, with such a deficit in the net school spending still looming and the continued claims by city and school leaders that there is a lack of state and federal funding, how does the city and school department plan on paying for these additional expenses this year and the years to come?

  2. The state would argue they pay plenty and it is the city's the one that needs to step up.
