A SENSE OF TIMING
Early yesterday afternoon I took at look at the agenda for the LSC meeting and I thought it wasn't going to be worth the effort to make it in. I'd naturally watch it on TV or catch it on-line. Maybe it had to do with all the commotion at LynnCAM but the meeting was almost over before there was any broadcast, Item D under new business I believe.
Seems like my online option wasn't available either. I guess I'll have to wait until they post the recording in a FEW days! Being this close to ELECTION DAY, not the best time for an ectrical malfunction or maybe it's the perfect time.
CHARTERS TO TORTURE PUBLIC EDUCATION
BRANDT DUNCAN, President of LYNN TEACHERS UNION stopped by my office this morning to discuss the impact of CHARTER SCHOOLS on PUBLIC EDUCATION. This appointment was made on the night of the debate. My friend LORI was invited to join the discussion but for whatever reason could not make it.
Trying to address some of her concerns about the fact of the money following the student and all, BRANDT agreed while that is true, there are some fiscal nuances and caveats that skew the picture and might not give an accurate reflection on first glance. While it is true that each student is allotted the same amount of money from the state but each one costs different amounts to actually educate. Much like in insurance, "GOOD" drivers help pay for "BAD" drivers. That helps keep the overall rate down It's a statistical thing and ACTUARIES actually become SUPERHEROES of sorts.
That only works though if all the student are taking a dip in the risk pool. That way there's money available if you need money for a select group of people to adhere to laws that regulate you. Like TRANSLATION SERVICES that LPS is supposed to provide for the 50 or so languages that are spoken. That's not a FREE service so someone has to pay.
To be truly fair, everyone has to participate and not succumb to the illusion of FREE CHOICE because OPTING-OUT of PUBLIC EDUCATION may seem fine at first will have disastrous long-term consequences. The most expensive students to educate will be the only ones left and with no money left their education will suffer and we will have to deal with a large segment of an undereducated population.
With limited supervision, charters will eventually cut corners to squeeze a profit. There is not necessarily anything wrong with that, I mean our country was formed on capitalism and private ownership. You will still have to pay the same taxes for dwindling returns. That's the actual result of the AMERICAN WAY and corporate consequences.
To eventually win the fight, PUBLIC EDUCATION has to rely on its namesake and learn from the successes of charters and not hunker down in combat mode. Because there is a JUGGERNAUT out there and they're winning the PR war. That's what corporations are good at.
In the end, everyone will lose if PUBLIC EDUCATION suffers a DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS,

MARVEN MEANS IT
Massachusetts faces a massive heroin epidemic. Over the course of the year there have been hundreds of overdoses that have resulted in the loss of life. I believe it's important to look at this issue from a human perspective. Every one of the individuals who has died is somebody's child, many were fathers, brothers, sisters and even grandfathers. Poor towns and neighborhoods are not the only ones facing this problem. It is a problem that every town and neighborhood faces in Massachusetts. In order to prevent further human suffering we need to develop a compassionate response. Not only do we need to prevent further people from developing addiction we need to help treat those struggling to escape it. If elected I will do my best to help develop a comprehensive plan to combat this epidemic.
OFF THE CHART-ER
Many who have seen charters replace traditional public schools report the same problems that New Orleans residents describe: closures of public schools that held neighborhoods together, younger and less experienced teachers, the loss of union jobs, experimental teaching practics that can be rigid or harsh, cherrypicking of students and rapid teacher burn-out."

Dear Brandt,
It was a pleasure to talk with you at the debate last night. I look forward to
your visit to my office to explain further some of the nuances of public school
funding and just how CHARTER SCHOOLS "take money" from public schools.
This is a complicated issue and I look forward to further enlightenment. I'll make
sure my secretary puts the coffee on.
Sincerely,
Stan
I WAS STARSTRUCK!
I was honored last night to be accompanied to the LTU DEBATE last night by an accomplished author of TWO books, APRIL ORDINEZ.
Besides being a GREAT chauffeur and providing intelligent, interesting conversation, APRIL got to help me celebrate the 34 th anniversary of my accident!

"SHE DOES EXIST"
Even I have taken better pictures but I did capture a rare elusive specimen. That being a "posed" (heck any photo is "rare") photo of JUNE NATOLA. I must say the image was indeed not frightening like I had been led to believe by the "hunted:.
This picture was taken before the debate last night and included JARED NICHOLSON, DONNA COPPOLA, ESTELLE, LORRAINE GATELY and JUNE.

THE PAST IS PRESENT FOR THE FUTURE
And face it I didn't even get one of RICK who is running for COUNCILOR-AT-LARGE. He wasn't in his seat until time to start and the best I could have done was the back of his head.
FORD OUT FRONT
| JOHN FORD |
At the debate tonight, I do have to say I found myself agreeing with JOHN FORD on a couple of key points. One, that I agree strongly with him is the money from the state, ie. Chap. 70 I guess, should go straight to the schools and not have to be filtered through the CITY's coffers.
While I'm not quite ready unlike him yo ABOLISH the DOE, I do think we do need to relax the oversight that has ked to micromanagement and stifled creativity in the classroom.
BOREDOM AT BREED
Wow, interesting debate tonight held at BREED MIDDLE SCHOOL tonight by the LYNN TEACHERS UNION. Not really, they all pretty much agreed on everything, the schools are underfunded, too much standardized testing, and we got great teachers. I am using a pic posted by JACK SUSLACK to my timeline because the ones I took sucked. That's a fact, JACK and thanks for the pic.
One interesting thing though, was NATASHA M & M's expression of LOVE for KIPP having 2 kids there, 1 in PRIVATE school coming from KIPP, and one at COBBETT ELEMENTARY (So that would make her PERSONALLY responsible for a large part of LPS's OVERCROWDING problems). Sorry NATASHA you know how I feel about CHARTER SCHOOLS, BUT "DAMN GIRL" I gots to give you PROPS for having the bravery (or maybe it was STUPIDITY, in which case I feel sorry for you) to charge in alone into the LION'S DEN carrying fresh meat in your luggage.

GARBAGE GOSSIP
Lots of people talk to me you see at least not the ones in fancy office on BENNETT STREET. I don't get a lot of response from CITY HALL either. In fact, I have NEVER heard from the MAYOR - no phone call, no e mail. Well wait a minute back when I was LYNN DISABILITY COMMISSIONER I must have got a form letter of some kind. I don't recall but surely, surely it must have happened. That's back when I was important.
Anyway I been hearing some rumblings from a COUPLE of people about goings on an what's not going on with some of the PRIVATE JANITORIAL MERCENARIES (THIS A MORE HYGIENIC TERM THAN SCAB). Seems like some classroom items have been apparently coming up missing. Some supplies may be the only thing being cleaned out because some of the rooms aren't being left none too tidy.
Let it be said though, I am making no statement of fact. I don't want to make Mike Donovan mad. I saw how angry he got when the LSC lamented over the fact that these cleaning crews have all had their fingerprints ran through the FBI DATABASE, SOMETHING LPS EMPLOYEES DO NOT HAVE TO SUBMIT TOO. In fact, he was a little hostile at even the implication pf questioning the virtue of these hired brooms.

TIGERS NOT KIT-TEN AROUND WITH MYSTIC VALLEY
The JV TIGERS football team feasted on MYSTIC VALLEY 20-6, winning BIG just like the VARSITY. TRIPPY tells me he actually returned a BLOCKED extra point some forty yards before being tackled.
Of course I congratulated him but then I did remind him that IF the rule was like the pros it would have only been TWO points and not quite the almost a touchdown he was bragging about. Oh well, it's better than I ever did and proves that eating isn't his only talent.
