"As of today, in the seven City Council wards, only three are being contested, and only by a single challenger each. Three councilors are running unopposed, and Jay Walsh and Brian Field are vying for the seat in Ward 7 being vacated by Rick Ford.
There are four at-large seats, and only six candidates are listed on the primary ballot. The School Committee consists of six seats, but only 10 candidates are running.
Whatever happened to hot local political races? Are they a thing of the past? Where is the current crop of youthful challengers to give the incumbents a run for their money?
This not to say any of the current office holders deserve to be defeated. But it would be nice if they were all challenged. That is the only way a democracy can survive — by people taking an interest in local affairs."
The conversation about cancelling Lynn’s preliminary election this September revolves around the fact that just about all of the seats in this year’s election don’t have enough candidates to determine anything other than popularity.
