WORD POWER

Good thing K didn't make it to last night's LSC meeting in person! Where's a crippled guy to sit? Surely not in my regular seat. Well the packed house was courtesy of all the individual award winning representing all the city's schools, their families, teacher's and principals. This was the first time in the awards history that all the winners were present. The contest was the GEORGE F. LAUBNER ACADEMIC AND ACHIEVEMENT AWARD where winners from each school on the value of education to them and their families. You know, real hopes and dream stuff.

Partnering with the LAUBNER family, the LYNN BUSINESS ED FOUNDATION sweetened the certificates with a $50 gift card to BARNES & NOBLE. A former SUPERINTENDENT and Reading teacher, I'm sure GEORGE would have recognized the symbolic importance of the honorarium.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF THE MAYOR WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR THE WHOLE SHOW!

Dear Mayor and other members of the Lynn School Committee,

Not only am I a parent of a SPECIAL NEEDS student, I am also a long-time board member of SPED PAC, currently holding office as Treasurer. Although I am not surprised by the votes of certain individuals, I am outraged by their brazen and possibly purely political desire to water-down the position of ADMINISTRATOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION.

The fact that two IVY-LEAGUE lawyers seemingly conspired to “dumb down” a position responsible for overseeing not only our most vulnerable students but also approximately 30% of the LPS budget. Let me help you with the math here, that’s $41.6 MILLION DOLLARS.

Hopefully those who played a part in this educational injustice will reconsider their callous disregard for unfortunately is a growing minority.

Sincerely,

Stan

PLAYING POLITICS

POLITICAL PAYOLA PROMISED?

As I predicted there was an epic battle over the job title SPECIAL ED ADMINISTRATOR. Despite a 3-0 vote in the PERSONNEL subcommittee (DONNA, MARIA, and
LORRIANNE-HER MOTION) to add a doctorate requirement to the job title for the posting of the position, the full committee with equal vigor, 3-0, voted not to require it leaving it to be preferred.

The PERSONNEL subcommittee's main argument was that since we REQUIRE MASTER'S out of our teachers with demands for continuing education that it would seem only fair that we have higher expectations for their BOSS, the ADMINISTRATOR. Thirty percent of LPS's budget is SPECIAL EDUCATION.

DONNA even said that given the complexities of SPECIAL ED and LPS's constant involvement with the legal system that maybe the position should require a law degree.

Surprising given his TWO IVY LEAGUE degrees LSC member ATTORNEY NICHOLSON

made the case for not valuing higher education. Seems a little hypocritical coming from a graduate of two esteemed PRIVATE colleges. If he really didn't value education so much why didn't he go to a state or maybe even community college. Hypocrisy is very prevalent in all politics.

Because he is intelligent and talks like a lawyer, he made a convincing argument for allowing candidates with lesser qualifications be allowed to compete for the job. All at the same time trying to sound like he agreed with the ENTIRE Personnel Subcommittee that the SPED ADMINISTRATOR should be a doctor. His teeth may be straight but I think he should have his mouth looked at. I mean, words seem to be coming out of both sides of it.

His argument was that requiring a DOCTORATE would prevent perhaps some OTHERWISE(meaning not-qualified) "qualified" candidates from applying.
Well DONNA COPPOLA shot down that argument by saying they could post the doctorate-required position and if it failed to garner enough applicants they could re-post it without that requirement. The committee has proven they don't feel the position is time-sensitive, even though the feds feel otherwise. I would argue that perhaps the BEST applicants are discouraged from applying because they don't think the district values SPECIAL EDUCATION enough to demand higher standards.

MARIA CARRASCO spoke to the elephant in the room suggesting that perhaps that someone was in mind that did not meet the higher standards. There have been strong rumors (not that I engage in spreading such) floating around about a certain individual who was supposedly going to be tapped for the new DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT'S job before good ole CHUCK came over from the dark side to demand a doctoral requirement there.

Then there was the ill-fated DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES whose rumor had the same name attached to it. That was successfully quashed or at-least delayed by LORRAINE who pointed out the violation of federal SPED law by going so long without an a specifically dedicated ADMINISTRATOR OF SPECIAL ED. At this point JARED had to side with her or risk being publicly outlawyered by a layman (other than me). Once he fell into line, the others followed.

Now we've come to this position and certain people, who happen to be in the majority, are probably be successful in eventually watering down this position enough to be able to place who they want in a high-paying position of enormous power.

WELCOME TO LYNN!

WHY THE MAYOR MISSED MEETINGS

Here is the reason MAYOR KENNEDY missed a CRUCIAL PERSONNEL SUBCOMMITTEE and MEETING OF THE WHOLE not to mention another POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE and MEETING OF THE WHOLE, and also missing over TWENTY minutes of the regular LSC meeting. Her absence included not being present for the presentation of some of the GEORGE F. LAUBNER ACADEMIC AND ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS, the ONLY city-wide AWARD presented to MIDDLE and ELEMENTARY students. This tardiness was disrespectful to both the students and to the LYNN BUSINESS ED FOUNDATION who is a vital partner to LPS (I will elaborate on that partnership in a later post).

I can understand the MAYOR'S desire to be there. I mean ST. MARY'S graduates are LYNN residents too, well maybe NOT ALL. However the fact of the matter is that by city charter the MAYOR is obligated to chair the LSC. Like it or not, that's her JOB. That's why we voted for her. Some of us anyway.

It's not like the schedule for these meetings are a surprise. Also I am pretty sure that the sun usually comes up everyday and we are all operating on the same GREGORIAN calendar Schedules could have easily been altered such that no conflict occurred

SO DOES THAT MEAN THE MAYOR WILL ATTEND EVERY GRADUATION CEREMONY?.

PROTECTION PROMOTION

Officer BOB FERRARI, the officer in charge of safety at the schools (whatever his exact title is at the schools) is retiring at the end of the school year. He has had a very successful stint in that position.

Dr, Latham, in conjunction with Chief COPPINGER and his Deputy have chosen Officer ORIN WRIGHT to succeed him. Currently Officer WRIGHT has distinguished himself as an SRO at FACTEAU-LEARY.

DASH TO SPLASH

SPED SHOWDOWN SET

Straight from the Policy Manual here is a job position I think they were all debating on the currect title - Administrator or Director of Special Ed.

It would appear everybody was wrong unless they were right. These things have a way of not being current you know. Updating is such hard work. Anyway no mention of minimum qualifications here but I'm sure it's somewhere. Someone really needs to learn about indexes

Transgender bathroom usage

Dear Mayor and other members of the Lynn School Committee,

Given all of the attention given recently surrounding the transgender use of bathrooms and the potential loss of Title IX monies, I feel that it is extremely important for the LSC to take an official public position on this issue and outline the steps you are taking to comply with this federal directive if that is your intention. Since the LSC’s very public vote in the past of banning any volunteers from Gordon College for the college’s beliefs then expressing your support for the intent of the president’s directive should not cause any angst.

So I may ask what is LPS’s plan going forward in order to comply. Given the precarious financial position we always seem to be in, we can ill afford to lose any source of revenue.

Sincerely,

Stan

Just like Christmas it is true
You may be having fun now but the bills they come due.

Last meeting John wanted to talk
However the Mayor she did balk

For discussion we'd have to wait
To be posted for a later date

Enough time has sure past
Still no talk, I am aghast

Not really cause I always knew
With NSS we're not really through.

FOUL LIQOUR

Yes our water's been tested
That much is true.
Did I hear right every three years
We test only two?

At that incremental rate
To test them all will take many a year
Before with any confidence we can be sure
That the tests will prove we're in the clear.

Bet there are lots of pipes
Constructed partly of lead
To try and calm fears
And put this controversy to bed.

Unfortunately the conclusions
They may eventually reach
That from these old pipes
Contaminants they did leach.
