CONNERY COMES THROUGH AGAIN

Another special day at ️Connery ... Along with the monthly pantry, we have been able to tie in seasonal assistance through Cradles to Crayons.. We gave out 103 bags filled from new sneakers, clothing, diapers, wipes, books, much more!!! Our parents were speechless! The staff I work with and the volunteers really are amazing! Thanks Pat Sanchez for coming to help out today

PAPER THE PARRC?

MARYLAND STUDENTS SCORE BETTER WITH PAPER AND PENCIL: Maryland students who took the PARCC test scored better on paper and pencil exams than they did on computerized tests, especially in English and eighth grade math. Part of the reason for the skewed results: State officials said more high-performing students took the tests on paper rather than online, The Baltimore Sun reports. But the full cause of the skewed results isn't entirely clear. Some state speculated that students who took the math test struggled to understand the "equation editor," for example, which allows students to write out equations digitally. The box for students to provide written answers on the English test was also longer on paper and pencil than it was on the computerized test. The paper and pencil tests could have prompted students to provide longer answers, which generally received higher scores. More: http://bsun.md/1WHiVLi.

- Similar results were seen in other states that took the PARCC test. Roughly 20 percent of students who took the exam on pen and paper last spring scored better on average than students who took the exam via computer, testing officials said earlier this month: http://politico.pro/1KIrvsy

COMING TOGETHER

Community Schools: Transforming Struggling Schools into Thriving Schools

In partnership with the Center for Popular Democracy and the Southern Education Foundation, the Coalition has issued a new report entitled Community Schools: Transforming Struggling Schools into Thriving Schools.

HEROIN AND HYPOCRITES

Thank you to Lynn's public safety and health officials for addressing the Council on the opioid epidemic. Lynn City Council was also trained tonight to administer Narcan. We need to fight this epidemic head on!

LPS has TWICE before had this on the agenda at school committee meetings but no vote was taken because of lack of clarity on just who was authorized to administer it. Since it's not on the agenda for tomorrow night's meeting they will not be able to formally adopt a seemingly standard policy. Hope no one OD's while they get thier $#%& together!

PAY ATTENTION LPS, CHANGE IS COMING LIKE IT OR NOT

Brooke Charter Schools and Neighborhood House will add high schools, while Brockton and Springfield gain…

DEADLINE TOMORROW FOR NEW PICKERING PROPOSAL

City on Fast Track for Pickering School Study:Project Design and Feasibility Proposals Due Feb. 24

February 18, 2016
Who could disagree with the need? The building is old and bursting at the seams. In fact I told you it should have been built before MARSHALL, I thought because I perceived it to be in worse shape structurally. Now I am about as close to being an engineer a I am a lawyer but I do argue pretty good sometimes and I did build a cabin or fort or two growing up back in good ole W. V. and A.

Some people agreed with me on the building priority and not all of them were from WARD 1. The prevailing argument was that if PICKERING were built first that a BOND for MARSHALL would never pass. Especially when the 80% reimbursement rate was actually closer to 60% when you factored in acceptable expenses. So the best case scenario for an 80% rate for the $130 M new PICKERING would probably leave LYNN on the hook for about $52 M. Of course we'd have to bond the whole 130 million first.

Having to bond the total upfront was something everyone seemed to be avoiding the answer when I was pushing them back at MARSHALL'S beginning. The new bonding reimbursement schedule was so new that everyone claimed ignorance ranging from a low of $16 Million to the $92 Million it actually was with about five different answers along the way. Well we know now.

I can't wait to hear the argument that we won't have to raise taxes for this one. Back in my ill-fated campaign in the election cycle before last. I warned you that we are not going to be able to build our way out of the crisis we have. I also told you that we would have an immediate need for a BILLION DOLLARS in new construction. Given the recent trajectory in the increase in cost looks like I wasn't too far off.

LET'S MAKE SURE THEY PUT A WOTRING WING IN THIS DESIGN PLAN!

The NGSS are performance expectations. They are not about recalling facts. It's important to keep this in mind when introducing them to your school.
