DOING THE "HOLIDAY HUSTLE"
I guess the citizens of LYNN just need to learn to dance. I mean Tis The Season. It happens every year about this time. Every year I scream about it to seemingly deaf ears, I am talking about the CANCELLATION of school committee meetings without any regard for makig them up. So despite getting BIG raises, looks like everyone on the LSC will be HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
LAST NIGHT IN ONE FATAL SWOOP WE HAD THE CANCELLATION OF TWO MEETINGS.
The second one in November and December became casualties of the calender.
Hard to have OVERSIGHT when there are no EYES ON THE PRIZE.
Or in this case - PRIZES.
HERE IS A SHORT LIST OF SOME THINGS SOMEONE SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR.
1). The time is near for an update on last year's NET SCHOOL SPENDING. Was the MAYOR right or was it all just more BUDGET BLUSTER?
2). About that FREE cash. Is it certified yet or we all just CERTIFIABLE for believing the MAYOR would make good on her promise to stuff an extra million in LPS'S stocking?
3). We are supposed to be HIRING two principal - one at FORD, the other at MARSHALL. There is litt;e doubt if no one else is there whose image will be made over. Can you say CULT OF PERSONALITY.
Looks like they'll be no COMING OUT party because the SUPERINTENDENT will be humming "DANCING BY MYSELF".

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE NO RIGHTS
Unfortunately I am not going to the LSC meeting tonight. Too much back pain for me so I can't show up to be a pain in their, uh well you know where. You see I was noticing on the posted agenda that the POLICY subcommittee is taking up LPS's NON-DISCRIMINATION policy again.
How long has this actually been going on. It seems like they have been tweaking this thing forever. Of course that didn't stop 4 members of the LSC to discriminate against GORDON COLLEGE for asking the same question that CATHOLIC CHARITIES asked.
Yes siree, LPS was JUDGE and JURY, convicting GORDON of a thought crime. It's kind of ironic that this issue is coming up again so close to VETERAN'S DAY. Didn't we fight a couple of wars to maintain our FREEDOM'S?

SLIPPING THROUGH THE NET
Isn't about time we hear something DEFINITIVE on LPS NET SCHOOL SPENDING for last year? Just to refresh your memory, KEVIN MCHUGH, LPS BUSINESS MANAGER (who's salary is about to be renegotiated) fekt the budget presented by the MAYOR and approved by the LSC FAILED to hit the 95% requirement of fully meeting the NET SCHOOL SPENDING amount thereby incurring a PENALTY.
FOR HER PART THE mayor STRONGLY FELT THAT WITH SOME FANCY ACCOUNTING WITH THE city SIDE paying for some allowable school expenses that while not FULLLY funded the budget fell well within acceptable parameters and WILL NOT incur a PENALTY. She claimed to have some of the city's auditors backing her up on this.
Well they both can't be right and I am curious to learn where we actually stand.

LPS HELPS CELEBRATE VETERAN'S DAY

The LYNN PUBLIC SCHOOLS played an integral part in a very moving VETERAN'S DAY ceremont today at LYNN MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM. There is not much doubt their involvement is PARTIALL responsible for the growing attendance at tis annualy ceremony.
The patriotic music performed by the growing LYNN PUBLIC SCHOOL BAND enegized the auditorium while ast the same time struck a solemn chord of deep respect. Beautifull accapello solo's were added by LYNN PUBLIC school teacher, GAYLE BASTARACHE, who always serenades the audience every year.
LPS FINE ARTS DIRECTOR JOE PICANO informed the audience that some sort of VETERAN'S program is performed in EACH of the schools thanks to the support and commitment of LPS SUPERINTENDENT DR. CATHERINE LATHAM. In the audience were LSC members PATRICIA CAPANO, JOHN FORD, RICK STARBARD, MARIA CARRASCO and addressing the crowd was LSC chair and MAYOR JUDITH FLANAGAN KENNEDY.
IT IS ONLY FITTING THAT LPS PLAY SUCH A LARGE PART IN THIS CELEBRATION BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING THE VALUE OF SACRIFICES MADE.
The AWARD winning LYNN ENGLISH JROTC not only PRESENTED THE COLORS but also treated the crowd to a couple of breathtaking drill presentations. The resppectful silence of the audience was frequently interrupted by gasps of amazement at their precision displays.
Sitting beside me as I enjoyed all of this was my son, TRIPPY, fresh out of football practice for LVTI. He took several pictures including one of the program which I already have up. I had already planned to have them up but it looks like I ran into some technical difficulties so I may have to wait a little on them.

PLAY NICE OR PLAY NOT
The LSC voted to adopt the MIAA'S GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY which states that if a student is suspended from school they will be suspended from a corresponding number of games and or practices.
I would think this is not a new policy change but rather a move to formalize already existing practices. I would suspect that it was more a matter of making sure there was uniformity throughout all the school districts.

This space squeeze is getting serious. When WARD 1 starts getting affected things will get real. What is real is simply that people in that ward vote. Since LYNN is now a majority minority city. So the excuse of the old boys network don't work no more cause there are a lot of new kids on the block.
TIME TO LEARN THE POWER OF THE BALLOT BOX.

IT'S COLD OUT THERE!
The Lynn Shelter Association is making a plea for help with raising $5K to be able to keep the shelter open during the winter days ahead. It's going to get cold out there! We all spend a few dollars frivolously every week. Please consider sending a donation. Their address is 91 Liberty St., Lynn, MA 01901. Now, where's your checkbook?
PLENTY OF WARM BODIES AND WARM HEARTS IN THIS OLD NEIGHBORHOOD
Looks like the students of FORD SCHOOL will beReceiving their free coat from CRADLES TO CRAYONS this Monday 8:30 OR 9 am. Having been a part of last years distribution, I can tell you seeing this program in action it sure warmed my heart to see the excitement on the faces of all those student bodies.
Thanks again go to DR. JENNIFER WU for making the original connection to CRADLES TO CRAYONS. DR. CRANE put the donation on steroids by securing a FREE coat for every student thereby eliminationg any stigma for the kids being easily identified as being the POOR kids.
The problem was in distribution. You see C to C would get you the coats butdidn't help with delivering them.and you just can't cram 600+ coats in the back of an SUV. OLD NEIGHBORHOOD was generous enough to provide a TRUCK to solve the problem. THE HIGHLANDS COALITION helped pass out the coats.
Earlier this school year I sat in on a meeting wbetween parents, members of the HIGHLANDS COALITION,TOM BORQUE, the interm principal, DEB RUGGERIO and the TRANSITION TEAM. LESLIE GREENBURG, HICO chairperson expressed concern that the expanded program continue. DEB said she had NO problem asking for that number of coats but didn't have the CONTACTS to insure delivery. LESLIE assured her that HICO could help.
THE REQUEST WAS PUT IN, THE COATS WERE DELIVERED YESTERDAY, AND WILL BE DISTRIBUTED MONDAY.

It is ebcouraging that discussions surrounding the importance of education will no longer take a back seat. Whether or not you agree with what is being said, the important thing is to talk.

SHAWS SHOWS SUPPORT FOR SEWELL-ANDERSON
A donation of $400 worth of merchandise was given to the school. Surely other supermarkets have given to schools as well. I surely would like to give them proper credit to encourage generosity like SHAW'S.
