A new plan is in the works to finally ekevate ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL above the perpetual LEVEL 3 designation. In the interest of educational parity, the mascot of the school will be changed to the JAPANESE BEETLE and all students will be innoculate with the ASIAN flu vaccine.
A source who wished to remain imaginary was quoted, "The DOGS will finally beat the RAMs!"

TAKING ON TITLE 1 ENGLISH STYLE
Last year LYNN ENGLISH got about $140,000 in TITLE 1 funds. The funds were used to buy every student a book that the whole school used as part of the summer reading requirement. The remaining balance was used to purchase SMART boards for classrooms that didn't have one.
This year's money hasn't come in yet but ........the plan is to spend it much the same way, I mean, there are a few classrooms left that need them. To be totally clear, MR. STRANGIE did solicit the input of the COUNCIL. He even told them to think about it.
I do wonder though, I thought a certain percentage, 10% I believe, has to be targeted in the area of parent engagement. I could be wrong. I mean, that's probably why they wouldn't let me speak!

In my defense I was still too hungover from that spread they had put over at the previous night's SCHOOL COUNCIL meeting at LVTI. For future reference for all of those people interested in bribing me, PASTRY IS MY PRICE!
Anyway a parent on the council asked the question, "Why is CLASSICAL a LEVEL 1 school and ENGLISH a LEVEL 3?" We had just heard a recounting of all the wonderful programs available at that school. Looking like he was choosing his words very carefully (Surely it was sincere trepidation and not because I was observing.), MR. STRANGIE went on to delicately explain that he thought it was because of the high concentration of LATINO students at ENGLISH versus the high concentration of ASIAN students at CLASSICAL. He went on to differentiate that it was a cultural thing involving the value placed on EDUCATION. The perception of extended Christmas vacations and the dropping out of some students to work in landscaping in the spring were reiterated.
Well, my conscious is a little clearer now that I got that out there. I mean, he probably meant no harm or disrespect by bringing that stuff up. Still, he did and I think I need to go take a shower after writing about it.

I believe earlier this week a child was involved in some sort of incident in which some front teeth were knocked out. The parent was notified via a call from the school nurse who evidently downplayed the seriousness of the injury.
However when the child came home it became evident that the injury was much more severe than they felt they had been led to believe. I have seen pictures of the child and I am appalled at the lack of attention paid to this matter. In order for the front teeth to be knocked out, the impact of the blow or fall must have been quite substantial.
Because of my personal experience with head injury, I know all too well the life-altering consequences brain trauma can have. I am sure you share my concern as evidenced by the LPS policy of even having band members take the same baseline test that all football players take.
There are many questions surrounding this incident, not the least of which is the matter of parental protocol. I trust you will thoroughly investigate this matter.

LET''EM HAVE IT LORI ABOUT THAT COUNCIL THING
After going to the SCHOOL COUNCIL meeting at LVTI, I'm on it in fact with TRIPPY, tonight I went to the SCHOOL COUNCIL at ENGLISH. The principal MR. STRANGIE greeted me and shook my hand with a firm handshake, I can read people by their hanfshake, my mom has gypsy blood in her (not really but it sounds mysterious), he welcomed me to stay but told me I couldn't speak (I guess he forgot that I am a writer not a talker)
Anyway there seemed to be a pretty good mix of parents and teachers. Also, FRED COLE was there from the BUSINESS ED group, a good man to have in your corner. LORI, you might find this interesting, they ELECTED a CO-CHAIR. The person elected to the position was SGT. MAJOR OSWALD (Who is going to argue with that)I guess MR. STRANGIE must have been the other but hey it's a guess.
I think he was a little nerous by my being there but he treated with the utmost respect. I hae some interesting facts to relay to you about the meeting but I'll get to that later. Immediately after the meeting they had their OPEN HOUSE and well my daughter does g OSWALD (Who is going to argue with that?)o there so I had BUSINESS.
I thought what was so cool was that I was escorted to the first classroom by a cadet. There were kids in uniforms with nice haircuts everywhere.

Dear Dr. Latham,
After going to the Imagine Learning presentation at Ford
School yesterday it occurred to me that perhaps this program is one of the
solutions to our UNACCOMPANIED MINORS problem. Since many of these people are lacking
in formal education, the grade level might be appropriate despite their
chronological age.
Hearing one of the teachers talking about the impact the
program made on some of the immigrant students live was uplifting. I realize a
pilot study is already underway for limited-English speaking parents and I
would urge you to consider expanding it ti the UNACCOMPANIED MINORS population.
I feel it would be money well spent.

With all the concern nowadays about head injuriess, who in their right mind would think that a fall hard enough to dislodge teeth is NO BIG DEAL. Do they say that because they don't want to answer wuestions like WHO IS WATCHING WHO?
Look falling down is part of growing up. IT HAPPENS, still someone higher in the chain of responsibility ought to be on top of this matter. Sorry, possible head injuries are a personal sore spot with me. Remember the NFL is paying a BILLION DOLLARS in compensation over the matter.

MEETING LIKE THIS
Sorry I missed the big meeting last night about CHARTER SCHOOLS. Duty called and I had to play parent so not only did I go to LVTI's SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING, they also had an OPEN HOUSE.
Joining me on the SCHOOL COUNCIL was my son, TRIPPY. I swear that boy is going to be MAYOR someday. My next foray into politics might be to manage his campaign.
I honestly don't know how much of his interest is his love of politics or that eeryone takes great ppleasure in seeing how much he can consume. PRINCIPAL PARADIS laid down the law through, making sure he ate a sandwich and just didn't fill up on cake, cookies, and brownies.

ONE OF OUR NATION'S LEADERS
FORD SCHOOL recieved a plaque and banner yesterday designating it a SUPERSCHOOL. Joining DR. CRANE (principal), the school's SPED teachers, people from the ELL DEPARTMENT, SUE ROWE (Deputy Superintendent),, DR. CHERYL MENINO (SPED Director), and MARIA CARRASCO (LSC).
Only 50 school across the nation have been designated an IMAGINATION SUPERSCHOOL and TWO of them are in LYNN, FORD and INGALLS.IMAGINE LEARNING provides an online learning platform that provides ELL assistance FOR the K-5 grades..
IMAGINE LEARNING is out of PROVO, UTAH but is active in several countries across the world, including, BRAZIL, MEXICO, and several others. Currently the top administrative of the company is in VIETNAM, on an invitation extended by the government. The leaders of the government realize the importance of having their citizens being able to understand ENGLISH.
Initially the program started out in the SPED department and DR. MENINO gave all the credit to colleague JESSICA MCGLAULIN for discovering its eistence. The success of the program quickly mushroomed once EUNICE ALDRIDGE and the ELL Department came on board.
Every year the SPED Department purchases a few additional perpetual licenses and IMAGINE LEARNING assists in the program growth by allowing the earning of additional licenses through some sort of usage REBATE.
Because of IMAGINE LEARNING'S generosity through the rebates, they have helped DR. CRANE set up a PILOT PROGRAM allowing parents to work on this exciting program. The overriding theory is that with the parents greater understanding of ENGLISH, they will become more able to become involved in their child's educational life.
Anecdotal stories about how young students started out being able to only read ENGLISH story's at a very low level but in a course of a year being able to advance multiple levels gives one an idea of the transformational power of this program.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Congratulations are due STACY PENA who has been hired as a PROGRAM SPECIALIST for the SPED department. I am sure it's probably a promotion and a raise. It's always good to see someone advancing, moving up!
BUT....
it does beg the question what are we talking about. I know I'm none too smart but the title seems too VAGUE and NON-SPECIFIC. We don't just hire TEACHERS, we hire ENGLISH teachers or FIFTH-GRADE teachers.
It is this kind of management why we have a $120 MILLION yearly budget and overcrowded classrooms in crumbling schools with outdated textbooks.
Anyway STACEY, it's not your fault. Good Luck and YOU GO GIRL!

TECH TALK TIME
LVTI'S JV team unfortunaatfsly lost for the final time this seasln this year to a team from WHITTIER INSTITUTE, A number of TECH students were on hand to watch the contest. On the opening kickoff for the second half my son did get to recover the onsides kick. I just thought I would report that fact just to remind everybody I am a parent and well, this is my blog.
I am super excited I have been asked to join the SCHOOL COUNCIL at TECH and tommorrow night is our first meeting. I have always been impressed with how active and thorough this organization is. Not by accident I am sure, the LVTI OPEN HOUSE is scheduled immediately after at 7 pm.
WORKS FOR ME! (I know it wasn't FOR me but it still works.)
