Tech to convert bridge remnants into sculpture
This is a great story about how those who educate our future respect the past. The creative approach really excites me. Hats of to CALVIN ANDERSON and RON BECKETT who had the energy to get this idea started. Further congratulations are due to LVTI principal DIANE PARADIS and SUPERINTENDENT DR. LATHAM for planning to see the vision through.

HOME COOKING,COOKING UP SOMETHING?
I have no idea if comment is true:
The reason Mr. Crowley spoke at the SC meeting was because his daughter had the teacher arrested at English.
If this is true, how big is this? I mean especially when you add in the fact that the ITEM turned off the comments on their coverage of this story.

Public Meeting Re: Marshall Middle School: 12/11/1...
There is another OPEN meeting that is well not necessarily convenient especially not for me and I don't even work for a living. Oh well, it is what it is and you know I'll tell you what I think it is.

TRANSLATION, INTERPRETATION, AND POSITIONING
Lynn’s bond rating upgraded to ‘A’
Here's how I see it. Our most Honorable MAYOR likes to tout her fiscal responsibility and present it as evidence as a reason why she should be re-elected while at the same time CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT TIM PHELAN who is the subject of some rumors about having some political aspirations for her corner office seems to downplay the importance of this development. Now FORTUCCI who was involved in a cat fight earlier between the MAYOR and CITY COUNCIL over city finances and accounting seems to be siding with PHELAN'S ASSESSMENT.
Now PHELAN doesn't want to give KENNEDY too much credit so as to give voters a reason to choose him over her.
I just wonder how our BOND rating is going to look once we take on 20 to 30 million dollars of debt after we build the new school. Also why do we even have to raise taxes to service a new debt to pay for our portion of the new school when we have such a big rainy day fund? You know check the weather outside. Let's break out our umbrellas and set aside some of that surplus. specially designated to cover this proposed BOND debt.
Let's come out now and give property owners peace of mind that their taxes won't go UP.

LET'S STAY AWAY FROM VISCIOUS CIRCLES
Teachers union’s idea has little local support
Honestly, I don't see where more "testing of teachers" would be any panacea for education. Sometimes raising the bar just puts you that much further away. We need to address the culture of education if we want to see any real improvement. Remember ultimately is to get better students, not better teachers. The teachers have already proven themselves.
We need to increased the perceive value of the results of a good education. There are enough hoops to jump through now adding more now would just be a distraction from our objective and make teachers more scarce which in turn would make class size larger. You see where I'm going here. We need better schools with smaller class sizes, first and OH YEAH, FULLY STOCKED LIBRARIES.

I'D LIKE TO INCORPORATE THE SCORES OF THE ANNEX
I was cruising on FACEBOOK looking for something to write about as I prone to do sometimes and I stumbled on this:
RESULTS OF FORD SCHOOL ANNEX STUDENTS JUST BEFORE CLOSING:
Now I am not often speechless but I was at a loss for words (mot really but it sounds nicee. don't you just love how it rolls off your tongue?).
Given our disastrous MCAS scores citywide, how can we ignore this relatively inexpensive to our problems? Instead we are going to be asked to pass a tax increase disguised as a BOND to build a state-of-the-art middle school that everybody agrees will be TOO SMALL on what many are calling contaminated land by potentially dangerous railroad tracks.
Now let's talk about those OPEN and PUBLIC meetings well that weren't exactly that. Oh yes, the letter of the law was followed. No violations here, BUT.....there were complaints about not being notified expressed at the last meeting at MARSHALL. There were also some scheduling conflicts but I am not one to start any rumors on intentions. Oh yeah, the meeting was held in the back cafeteria and there weren't any signs that I saw. To be fair, I must disclose I need to have the cataracts in my left eye removed. I am a mullti-dimension-ally disabled individual.
THEN there is the timing of this next OPEN meeting. Looks like it is set to happen in the morning when most people are working and can't come. ME, I'm not working but I still can't come - got parent stuff to do. CATHE, you should have checked with to see if I'm available before you schedule these things. You know me, I want to work TOGETHER (to be honest I don't think she TRUSTS me).
Back to the ANNEX, so......
It looks like you won't be needing that SWING SPACE you were crying about and since the LPS ADMINISTRATION is SUPPOSED to be moving to BENNETT STREET that will leave COMMERCIAL STREET open and well FORD SCHOOL with all its NASA ties and a microscope that hooks up to the SMART board (more on this INCREDIBLE story later) seems to me it would be a PERFECT fit to move the ANNEX there
I mean you are planning on moving your office out right? You do like those scores, don;t you?
SO, ARE YOU FEELING ME, LUCKY?
No I didn't mean like that. C'mon I've been married enough times already/
RESULTS OF FORD SCHOOL ANNEX STUDENTS JUST BEFORE CLOSING:
Proficiency is percent of students who were proficient or better in each subject.
6th grade: 72% proficiency ELA; 54% math proficiency (highest in city both subjects)
7th grade: 61% ELA; 35% math (equal to Pickering in ELA, second to Pickering in math)
8th grade: 75% ELA; 42% math (highest in the city both subjects)

WARNING, POETRY UP AHEAD!
EDUCATIONAL CULTURE
Community is the reality of reality
where small becomes large
where commandments become
principles to be learned.
Life's lessons don't always
come from the pages
of some musty book
but instead from the
hearts of your neighbors
just trying to help you
survive the lessons of
an otherwise lonely life.

BREAKING NEWS - LYNN GIRLS TEST POSITIVE FOR HEAVY FOR HEAVY METAL
LYNN should be so PROUD. We are coming home from the NATIONAL POP WARNER CHEER-LEADING COMPETITION with two gold medal and a silver (barely missing another GOLD).
Go Bulldogs!
Hey, maybe we do have a good mascot after all.
CAN YOU SAY GRANDSTAND?
Former Lynn councilor: Test teachers for drugs
Where was CANDIDATE CROWLEY when COUNCILMAN CROWLEY was in office? Did anyone hear such an outburst when an arrest was made up at FORD SCHOOL? I guess this" innocent until proven guilty" teacher is not related to anyone that is favored,
I wonder if this teacher will get the RUMORED (so I've been told) FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE) that this person got?
THEN AGAIN
does CANDIDATE CROWLEY favor RANDOM DRUG testing of his employees? The MAYOR used to be one. As EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of GLSS, CROWLEY oversees the RIDE (that's where the MAYOR comes in. She used to be my part-time chauffeur. Small world, isn't it?). What about my safety? Was he as concened about me and my poor disabled friends? I am so vulnerable.
Something funny is going on, the ITEM wouldn't take any comments on this story when it broke and they went dark again in allowing comments on the student weapons story.

CLEO HAS CAUGHT THEM
I am not saying this meeting is on the QT.....
BUT.......
I am just saying the broom closet must have been full so they had to use an alternative location. How can we get parents involved when we have such low expectations? Unless....
MAYBE....
it's not an accident.
UH.....
didn't someone at the last MARSHALL MEETING ask for better communication?
WE NEED DELORES TO DELIVER
Coming home from my BOSTON STREET OFFICE this morning a car pulled over by ST. PIUS to talk. Nowadays I'm very suspicious when cars pull up beside me. What really raised my fears was the fact that I was right by both a church and a funeral home, CUFFE-MCGINN (there you go Loretta, a shameless plug).
"DON'T SHOOT, I WON'T TALK NO MORE ABOUT THE BOND, I PROMISE!"
Phew, it was only DELORES.
REMEMBER HER? I may have, used to, perhaps, on occasion misspelled her name a little. Okay a lot, but can you blame me? She had more than her share of consonants going on.
To everyone's surprise, she lost the last election. Heaven knows she had the signs. Seeing her name in so many yards helped me greatly with my spelling deficiency.
After the primary her campaigning tailed off because she let family issues take precedence over her election. Imagine that a candidate with family values. I hope she runs again.

HEADING HOME
Sailing through last Thursday night's LSC meeting was another homeschooling request. No questions but then again I am not sure how many questions they can legally ask. Of course thaat didn't stop them when it was LAURA'S turn. REMEMBER ?http://lynnschoolwatch.blogspot.com/2012/09/halloween-comes-early-at-lsc-meeting.html
Now I'm not one to play cards but if I was it would be solitare because one gets the appearance that the DISABLED community was SINGLED OUT.
DON'T WORRY LAURA, I THINK THEY JUST GOT SOMETHING AGAINST POETRY!

CLEO HAS BEEN KEPT 20,000 TIMES
Today is an important milestone in the educational climate for the city of Lynn. Congratulations to CLEO HEREFORD for hitting the 20,000 view milestone for her thoughtful and objective blog,
. Now I have been known to steal her data but hey, she's better at that stuff than me. The important thing is that she is out there showing the growing interest our citizens have in wanting the best education for our students. Besides, she is so cute and better to look at than me.

HOW CAN IT BE FOR LEVEL THREE?
Perhaps LPS was just in the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT or the more politically correct had a little HOLIDAY HI-JINX. It seems that all our LEVEL III schools are going to spend thousands of dollars each for a non-mandated study to assess why we are FAILING. Don't we already spend enough on data manipulation?
I hear these assessments are going to take 2 1/2 days and be in the price range of $2100.
I'll tell you much faster. Too many kids, too little space and not enough books. When you make out the check, don't forget I am a JR.

TIME WELL SPENT
A longer school day may not be the correct way to improve our learning curve. In fact it may well even be counter-productive. The human brain can only absorb so much, so fast. If say a curriculum is bad how will spending more time studying it make it any better?
Longer school days do offer the prospect of extended child care and that is attractive to some but I question its effectiveness as a means to improve educational results.of There are plenty who extol the virtues of an extended day and may even claim to have studies to back it up. Well everyone should know how I feel about numbers. I think a lot of these claims are bogus and are based on shallow data. It is darn near impossible to isolate the length of the school day as a variable.
Our attention spans are so short that we garble up our language so we don't have to type our text messages. Where is the arguments for TWITTER expanding it's character limitations? Less is more, right?
My guess it's not so much how much we're spending doing it as what we are doing.Getting a child excited about reading will make the learning take care of itself. Libraries in elementary schools should be our NUMBER 1 priority.

BULL DOGS WIN RIBBONS
Saugus cheerleaders win own national title as a second Lynn squad just misses
After "C-squad" had won a national title in its class the day before the East Lynn Pop Warner B-squad girls barely missed its OWN national title by a little less than THREE-TENTHS of ONE PERCENTAGE POINT.
AS I SAID, "THESE GIRLS WILL DO (have done) LYNN PROUD".
in the interest of full disclosure, my daughter is on B-squad

PREVIEW OF BROOKLINE?
When you put 1100 teens in such close proximity to trains, the potential for bad things happen.

PARKING THE BOOKMOBILE
We were told at the last LSC meeting about the new ITINERANT LIBRARIAN being hired. I've actually not seen anything written down on this. I am not saying it doesn't exist, I just haven't seen it. I go pretty much to all the LSC meetings but I don't get a copies of all the correspondence and the other paperwork like the LSC members and I think the ITEM.
ITINERANT LIBRARIAN is one with a traveling schedule or ITINERARY. For now this person is parked at the WASHINGTON SCHOOL.We were told that she is busy getting all the MATH and SCIENCE books together. You know it's a STEM elementary school and there is a lot of MATH and SCIENCE books to read tailored for little boys and girls to read, once they learn to read.
PERHAPS....
this persons time could have been better spent at a school that is already up and running. That would have been INNOVATIVE.
