THREE CHEERS FOR CATHE
We are looking for a new: Deputy Administrator of Special Education
Lynn Public Schools. Maybe we are finally looking for some fiscal responsibility by making these COMMERCIAL STREET CRONIES go the extra mile to earn their salaries. Honestly this was more than even I expected:
JOB GOAL: To advise and lead the cheerleaders so that they function as effectively as possible to instill school spirit at athletic events
ALTHOUGH.......,
don't we already pay somebody a stipend to be a coach for that.

I have noticed on the LPS website that there are three principal positions that need to be filled. Following your pledge to continue parental involvement when filling these important positions, how may I ask are you planning to insure parental input? Do you have a timeline for such input?

LOOKS LIKE I LOST MY BOUNCE
Well I did it. Against my better judgement I created a new e mail address to see if I can avoid the block placed against my old address. So far it hasn't bounced back so maybe I'm back on-line.
Still I feel so dirty, like I tricked them against their will. It's like I have to go in the back door like a second-class citizen. All hail G-mail.

SOMETIMES THEY'RE NOT QUALIFIED TO ACT
Let's turn our attention away from LPS for a moment. On the issue of credentials, I have learned the principal of KIPP doesn't even have her masters http://kippma.org/kippma-leadership.php. Now she has been out of school since 1996. Graduating from WELLSLEY is quite an accomplishment but a degree in ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, I don't even know how many EDUCATION classes, if any she had.

Anna Breen - Principal, KAL Middle School
Ms. Breen grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Environmental Science. She began her teaching career in 1996 as a Teach for America corps member in Washington Heights, New York. After fulfilling her 2 year TFA commitment, she moved on to KIPP Academy in the Bronx, where she taught 7th and 8th grade science, math, and English for five years. She moved to Virginia and taught math and science in a public school for one year before moving back to Massachusetts in 2004 to help found KIPP Massachusetts as the 5th grade math teacher. In 2006, Ms. Breen was promoted to the role of Assistant Principal of KAL, and recently took on the role of Principal. She lives in Lynn with her husband Nat and baby daughter Serena.

SEE, I'M NOT FOOLING

ACTING QUALIFIED
My latest degree of concern is over degrees. From my understanding, albeit limited, teachers are required to get their Master's after FIVE years. And then there is that MENTORING thing. If you remember way back at that special meeting that our HONORABLE MAYOR called it was discovered that we were paying two residents at the same house $800 a day each to mentor teachers.
When this was brought to light they suspended their services. We were told by DR.WARRY if we didn't honor this contract, we would have to give a lot of RACE TO THE TOP money back. Well what eventually did happen? Inquiring minds want to know. I digress.
Back on focus. Teachers need advanced degrees but people in the administration don't have to have specific degrees. Unfortunately sometimes ACTING means just that, pretending to be qualified for the job.

HISTORY PASSES THE JOURNAL BY

History was made and THE LYNN JOURNAL didn't sit on the sidelines. They weren't even at the game or see one of the rebroadcasts. I guess they figured that since they've been on both sides of this issue from lauding DR. LATHAM as WOMEN OF THE YEAR to lambasting her absence from particular events and decrying the state of public education that their absence wouldn't be noticed. Sad to say, they were right.
Since there are no paying subscribers, it is the advertisers that lose. This has been proven to be a topic the community is interested in. Never before have enough people came together to demand such a hearing. The TIGER'S DEN was full for three hours that night. The SUPER BOWL probably doesn't last that long and I hate to remind you what ad time costs there.

Luckily for Lynn there are young leaders among our youth who recognize the importance of giving. the BOY'S CLUB has done an excellent job of educating him.

MARSHALL MORNING MAYHAM
I was at MARSHALL MIDDLE SCHOOL this AM, you know parent stuff. Probably around fifty kids came into the office late.I do not know for sure but it seems like it's an everyday occurrence. That's roughly 5% of the student body. How can this be?
Sure blame the parents and how they raise the kids. They don't teach them values and the importance of education. That is an easy argument. But what about the school's responsibility? Don't they have some culpability?
Punctuality should be stressed, demanded. If the school doesn't place a value on it, how can you expect the kids or their parents too?
We have an annual budget of $108 million dollars a year and say 5% of our students(collectively-I know the same students are not late everyday) are not getting a full days education so that means we are paying for a little over 5 million dollars for education our kids aren't getting their money's worth.
Remember poetry and math don't always mix, but everybody pays taxes.

RAMS BE FEASTING
Now that the hearing is out of the way, I am going to turn my attention to other things while I wait for the budget to come out.
At the last regularly scheduled LSC meeting a couple of CLASSICAL students presented sworn testimony how the new lunch menu transformed their lives. ENGLISH HIGH is set to come on board soon.
Sorry I couldn't stay for the ceremony but I believe a group of RAMS canonized JEFF RICHARDSON who runs the food service. No mention was made of PINK or slime of any other color.

CUDDLE UP TO MORE COMMERCIAL STREET PADDING
With all the HEARING HOOPLA, I never got around to the fact the LSC under LATHAM'S direction approved a DIRECTOR OF PERSONNEL position or whatever name they want to dress up the position with. I guess that COMMERCIAL STREET is getting so crowded (just like our classrooms) that they need someone to direct traffic.
They tried to slide in the posting without putting a salary range with it but LSC MEMBER DONNA COPPOLA said "NOT SO FAST", demanding transparency and accountability. DR. LATHAM promised to attach one. We shall see and I will show you.

How long before LPS uses this great local source for violence prevention? There was a lot of hoopla after the COOK STREET CAPER but precious little action. It must be something someone in administration has against his "head paraphernalia". My secret sources do confirm he is a PATRIOTS fan..
