Dear Dr. Latham,
During the last school committee meeting, some incorrect information
was given in regard to the extent of Gordon Collee's involvement with
Lynn Public Schools. I am sure that the mistake was an honest one
as you were not prepared to discuss it since it was not an item previously
listed on the agenda.
Still, I feel the public deserves a right to know the correct information
regarding the number of schools involved, programs, number of student
teachers and the number of LPS students impacted.
A reader of my blog had an excellent suggestion, that ALL volunteer
groups be listed with their degree of involvement. This would give credit to
those who are involved and might encourage new partnerships. Also it would
bring into focus a little clearer the relative impact the recent decision made.
As I am sure you are aware, I am publishing my letter on my blog and will
share your response if you choose to do so.

FORD SCHOOL WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME - WITH THE RECENT CHANGE GUESS IT'S FALL BACK
NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ANNOUNCES $150 MILLION INVESTMENT TO CONVERT LOWEST-PERFORMING SCHOOLS INTO COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
Washington, D.C. - November 4, 2014
In a speech yesterday at a school in East Harlem, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his plans to convert the 94 lowest-performing schools in the city into community schools. With an intended investment of $150 million, these schools will implement the community school strategy to offer key opportunities and supports to students including health, mental health, and mentoring; more afterschool and summer learning opportunities for students; activities and classes for children, families and community members in the evenings and on weekends; and, an additional hour of instruction per day.
De Blasio’s announcement makes concrete his commitment early on to create 100 community schools across the city. It supplements a recent investment: to repurpose $52 million in state funds to launch 40 new community schools in the city. The Mayor’s action adds to the momentum for community schools across New York state where Governor Cuomo has invested $30 million in community schools in the past two years.
Said Mayor de Blasio today, “Community schools embody the values we believe should drive public education and make a real difference in student achievement…We cannot expect a model created in the 1800s to deliver a 21st century education. Community Schools are designed for us, here and now: they invite parents and other members of the community in on their own schedule; and they prepare students for the jobs of today – which increasingly require skills previous generations could not have dreamt of…Community Schools can – and in time will – make a difference in every part of the city.”
“Mayor de Blasio’s vision of community schools sends a message to all of us that we must work together to ensure that all of our young people have an equal opportunity in their educational experiences,” said Martin J. Blank, President of the Institute for Educational Leadership and Director of the Coalition for Community Schools. “We stand ready to support the Mayor and our partners in New York to make his vision of thriving community schools throughout the city a reality and a testament to the power of uniting school, family, and community for young people’s success.”

GORDON GOT YOUR GOAT?
Watching the replay of the LSC meeting ole CHUCK made me CHUCKle or maybe it was an UPCHUCK from what he was trying to cram down our throats. After being tossed a softball by the SUPERINTENDENT who suddenly decided to talk about how the void was going to be filled left after the SEVERING OF TIES with GORDON COLLEGE.
I do question the timing of this announcement since by the SUPERINTENDENTS own account and from a newspaper report a couple of days after the initial vote, they had the offers of assistance and the subject had been brought up in previous LSC meetings and nary a word on plans going forward.
The additional HELP is not really an addition, just a offer to possibly expand existing partnerships to take up the new found slack. Those offers came from ENDICOTT and NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Which means we are kind of talking APPLES and ORANGES here since GORDON is a four year college and NSCC is only a two year one.
While everybody was getting ready to go home CHUCK gad to spread his share of misinformation to try and SKEW THE HUE by dimming the lights on the issue. He would falsely lead one to believe only one LPS school, HARRINGTON was involved in working with GORDON students. When in fact, I personally sat on FORD'S SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL with VAL BUCHANAN from GORDON COLLEGE for a few years. It turns out though, FORD SCHOOL has severed ties with me. I can't imagine why.
Listening to CHUCK chatter, I think maybe he forgets whose interest he is supposed to be looking out for. By trying to shift the FOCUS of the deBate on the limited number of GORDON STUDENT TEACHERS involved, he would rather you overlook the potential THOUSANDS of LPS students that are being denied access to assistance.
CHUCK, WE NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT FORESTS AND TREES.

Brian LaPierre, a Teacher's Union official, recently joined LSC member RICK STARBARD in the race for one of the four COUNCILOR-AT-LARGE positions. With current LSC member JOHN FORD running for the WARD 7 COUNCILOR position, chances are that the NEXT CITY COUNCIL will realize the vital and key role that our schools play in the overall health of the city.

TIME TO LEARN TO PARTY
It seems participation in the HALLOWEEN parade a the FORD SCHOOL is becoming more of a pedestrian event with the spirit of the holiday. It's easy to blame the growing lack of interest in the holiday to the increasing influx of immigrants from countries that don't celebrate this particular holiday. Each country has their own special day. That's the POLITICALLY correct answer.
HOWEVER when people have to fight to have a celebration, the leaders are guaranteed a self fulfilling prophecy. Leaders need to lead. This apathy is not specific to one school. Taking time away from teaching isn't the only result from this and other celebrations. Remember students are kids with feelings and emotions not just data points. All the near-sighted see are numbers and are blind to the big picture. Parties are planned pressure releases and serve a purpose.
A bottle of water and a cupcake do not a part make. Those who only crunch the numbers lose sight of how learning really works. Frivolity helps adjust the focus.
