What I find interesting, with the exception of Callahan and Lynn Woods swapping spots, the top performing half of the schools stays the top half in both ELA and Math. And if Connery, Harrington and Washington are our lowest performing schools with Washington the absolute lowest performing - Where is Washington's money?

Listening to everyone talking about how the superintendent's evaluation was specifically mandated in her contract, makes me wonder who works for whom. The LSC haven't even evaluated her since 2009. How do they know if she has done GOOD or BAD. RICK STARBARD, LSC member has been no friend of hers but neither has he been a mortal enemy. All he has done is to try and be objective. KONVULSIONS AT KIPP
I warned my BFF about drinking too much KOOL-AID. At the very least it will rot your teeth. Suddenly KIPP's numbers aren't so statistically superior. I heard this year they didn't make AYP. So we lost a priceless view and are putting a historic landmark in jeopardy so that when the school fails some developer can turn the empty school building into lavish apartments, all built with money that should have went to LPS.

"No Child Left Behind" behind that is. RICK (STARBARD) reminded everyone that this legislation has imposed unrealistic, unfunded mandates that monopolize the education process, forcing teacher's to take too much time teach the test.At last week's LSC meeting he successfully proposed that the other members of the LSC sign a petition advocating the repeal of NCLB.
He was so passionate on his position he even swore. I told him on FACEBOOK he needed Jesus but that I remembered it was a Jewish synagogue and he didn't play that gig.

I like Delores. Surprise! Still though she was a little annoying at the debate. I mean she kept leaving her chair I was getting DIZZY.
Don't get me wrong, I thought her standing up for the inntroduction was great. Separate yourself from the competition. But after a couple of questions I began to think I was at a yo-yo competition instead of a debate. If it wasn't for her incredible experience, I'd rename her "SLIM-SHADY".

NOW HEAR THIS!
Let's talk about SAFETY for a moment. Safety for our kids. There is a school at SACRED HEART and there is also a food bank there as well. I didn't know they gave out absolution with day-old bread. I have information from reliable sources that there is a LEVEL 2 sex offender volunteering at that food bank.
I am not Catholic but I do want to be. However with all my ex-wives there is a lot to work through. I read and pray a lot. I plan on spending time in purgatory before rising to heaven. BUT I DON'T HAVE TO REGISTER.

At the debate last night, he held his mouth too close to the mike. His pat answers prompted my BFF to label him a consummate politician. What did she expect, he's a lawyer?
Still I heard good things come out of his mouth. That has always been my complaint about him, I just never heard anything from him. I've heard a few things about him, you know like, "He's a Clancy plant". Last I heard Chippper isn't running the government anymore.

Excuse me, a little housecleaning first. Yesterday my wife and son were on the bus. He had to use last years student bus pass because his "Pickering Pass". My wife witnessed approximately ten KIPP students TAP AND GO. Why is that? What makes them so special they get more favorable treatment than LPS? Someone should call attention to this discrepancy. WE'D LIKE TO OFFER YOU THESE CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION - "BUT NOT YOU"
At tonight's school committee debate about there were about five or six awards handed out at the close.They were just tokens of appreciation, little symbols of recognition. All of them were deserved but in varying degrees.
It was a time to thank the people and media that has helped ELCA bring attention to the community and to the schools and their problems. HELLO! Sitting beside my BFF, she kept saying you should be getting one of these. Though each time a name was called it didn't sound nothing like mine. I can't say I was surprised, maybe with all the politicians in the audience they were afraid someone would get their forked tongue tied and wouldn't be able to talk out of both sides of their mouth. NO RECOGNITION FOR "THE WATCH".
Maybe I'm wrong. I"ve never made it a secret I'm not good in math and some would say marriages too, but that's another matter. Last time I looked I'm closing in on 50,000 hits. I suddenly have lots of new friends and politiians are clamoring for my attention. At the last LSC meeting JOHN FORD asked me to go easy on him because he was a "senior citizen". Have you noticed JOHN, I have more gray hair than you? Does LPS's drug testing policy cover hair dye? Even so, we both have more hair than the rest of the follically challenged males at the LSC Candidate debate tonight. But I digress.
The ITEM and its reporter got an award. REALLY. How many times have they been inhaling the dust from my stories. Yeah they do a better job at flushing out some of the things you hear here first but...Yeah, I'm opinionated and unabashedly not objective but you know what I'm usually always right. Some people may not like some of my answers but chose to focus on attacking me and not making constructive solutions. I'm not afraid to look at more than one solution and give credit to good ideas.
Now I'll get down off my little soap box and on to analyzing the debate over the next several posts.

HOME SCHOOL, HOUSE RULES OR HOW TO AVOID THE MCAS
"I SO RECOMMEND" I have been listening Dr. Latham echo those words every time in the past eighteen months or so every time a proposal for home schooling comes up before the LSC. I know the definitions of all the words but I really didn't know what they really meant. Not until the last LSC meeting.
Here I thought the MCAS was like death and taxes, no one can avoid them. Just like in the three marriages before this one, I was wrong. I learned at the last meeting "home school boys" don't have to play that game. I'm short on details but it seems that these "la casa academic" not only don't take the test, LPS does not get any monies for their education. Where does the money go?

The PHELAN FACEBOOK FLAP ON TEACHERS AS FRIENDS diverts from the real issue. Kids bully other kids, not teachers. Teachers can TEACH the proper way to behave. RICK STARBARD is proposing what I feel is the proper policy, limited interaction - not ABSOLUTE EXCLUSION.

DID THEY NEED/HAVE PERMISSION TO PLAY?
There was a terrible lot of discussion on the priorities and procedure for use of the inside of the school buildings last Thursday night at the LSC meeting, As this picture taken this afternoon of the Drewicz School parking lot shows even the outside space can be used. A group of high school boys were using the space for some kind of organized practice. My reasoning for thinking it was organized? Pick-up games don't usually have whistles.

HONG NET, CANDIDATE FOR COUNSELOR-AT-LARGE, was out holding signs today across the street from HOOD PARK (by LYNN CLASSICAL HIGH SCHOOL).
Along with a lot of other kids, my son had his first soccer game today!

With the election looming and the LSC Candidate Debate on Wed. Sept 14, one question stands out above all others: "What is each individual candidates stand on rehiring Dr. Latham for three more years?".This question takes on EXTREME significance when you take into consideration the DEPLORABLE condition of our schools.
I don't know and don't if I can know. Personnel matters are TOP SECRET. But I heard a rumour that we have to give her a 90 day window before her contract ends to let her have the opportunity to walk while getting paid, STANDARD CONTRACT.

MARIA IS EVERYWHERE!
Usually I like to grill politicians but tonight THE WATCH got to go to a politician's grill. Burgers and sausages were on the menu and COUNSELOR-AT-LARGE CANDIDATE HONG NET was there to spice up the event. Jesse and Natalie Jaeger transformed their backyard into KITCHEN STADIUM and Lynn became host to IRON CHEF AMERICA for an evening.
Also in the audience were CALVIN ANDERSON, CANDIDATE FOR COUNSELOR-AT-LARGE and MARIA CARRASCO, LSC CANDIDATE FOR REELECTION. Lynn's blog world was also represented by TOM SHEENAN of LYNN-SIDE EDITION,
INTERNET ANYONE?
Timing is everything. Right in the middle of all of the much anticipated Facebook Frenzy that fizzled no thanks to Phelan, LSC approved allowing COMCAST to send home flyer's announcing a special program called "Internet Essentials". This program would allow student's households that receive free lunch to get Internet for $9.95 a month. Also they could get a low cost computer for $149. Anticipating competition, permission was also given to Verizon if they home future flyer's.
This means a viable Facebook policy takes on possibly much greater significance. Me, I'm not worrying about Facebook, it's the fact that I could be facing thousands of new blogs I have to scoop!

LET ME BE CLEAR ON FACEBOOK
My opinion of this whole Facebook Fiasco is this. While I recognize the inherent danger of young people being on Facebook at all, they are. In a perfect world we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. If you haven't noticed, our world is full of problems.
People lie. There is NO way the school can stop that. You can't legislate morality. As I have previously stated this is not a PREVENTION problem but a MANAGEMENT one. I think RICK STARBARD has offered a GOOD compromise with the GROUP suggestion. This provides a way to teach responsible behavior on this matter.

FAILED FACEBOOK FIRESTORM DOESN'T PREVENT ONE PHELAN FROM PLUCKING PRIME POSITION AT LPS
Lights, camera, inaction! With the Fox 25 News camera rolling, any attempt by City Council President to interject himself in the middle of what is sure to be a heated and controversial debate floundered on the TABLEd.
But the sideshow never opened. Let's talk the meaning of the sideshow. Was it just a political ploy just to garner attention? I really wonder. Let's face it COUNCILMAN PHELAN'S job is pretty secure. Judging from the HUGE signs I see along the roadsides, he most likely will be re-elected in a landslide.
What pre-tell was all the sideshow about?
Could it have been a distraction so no one would NOTICE that his wife STACY PHELAN landed a prime PROGRAM SPECIALIST job for the LEVEL 4 school CONNERY. There are questions out there of her meeting the credential criteria. At $74,000 a year, we can't afford PATENT POLITICAL PATRONAGE!

Facebook Flea Falls Flat, Phelan Fails
Sorry Tim, your faint attempt to try to position yourself in the middle of the Facebook flap fell on deaf ears. The action taken was to take no action. A special meeting of the LSC will take place at some time in the near future to discuss this politically charged subject. But for now we just kick the can down the road a little further. At least until after primaries.

Is nothing sacred? It used to be I only had to battle the ITEM over the overlooking the ongoings and going on's of the LSC. But tonight with Facebook on the agenda a new face was in the audience.
Not only a new face but a new pair of eyes on what looked like a TV camera with a Fox 25 logo on the side. I asked a couple of LSC committee members who were unaware of the intrusion. Then one said, "Oh yeah I did see a guy withh a notebook asking Judy questions!"

STRESS RELIEF SERVED UP LSC STYLE
After a lovely day in court today I need a few laughs. I'm glad there is a LSC meeting tonight to provide them. Even though our children's education is no laughing matter that doesn't stop the stand-up (actually they remain seated).

TRANSPORTATION TROUBLES?
With all the frenzy created by the Facebook Follies, I totally missed the memo about the prestigious promotion of LPS transportation czar, DAVE HEGAN that he now has the ability to determine on a case by case basis who is entitled to door to door service. He may have legitimate safety concerns but perhaps he should have been consulted BEFORE the IEP was signed and thereby opening LPS to further SPED violations,

ANOTHER SPED VIOLATION?
The WATCH has been made aware of a fellow parent whose son's IEP that was rejected last spring still hasn't been resolved and school starts TOMORROW! This lack of response from the school department is just what we need to get the state to take over the SPED department.

This story is SAD. Why, you may ask? Because it is a distraction from the REAL issue: FAILING SCHOOLS.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. MARIA CARRASCO is the only person of color on the LSC and there aren't that many minority teachers in LPS.
IN THE INTEREST OF FULL DISCLOSURE: My bi-racial son transferred into Marshall while his TWIN sister was DENIED and forced to stay at Marshall.
Oh yeah and another thing, there were rumours going round last spring that Marshall and Pickering were going to exchange principals because of Marshall's reaching the failing schools pinnacle. That obviously didn't happen, I guess do to the slow dismantling of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.

LOST IN A MIHOS MINUTE
Maybe it's because of my brain damage or just because of my feeble poet's mind, but I had a hard time following the guest commentary in today's ITEM. Maybe it was just because it was written in a foreign language only discernible to lawyers and the like. The author was none other than LYNNCAM's attorney.
All I know is the mild mannered attorney for LPS name was bandied about in connection with some allegedly contentious characters. Seems like there was a lot of interest in CONFLICTS OF INTEREST.

THE BUS IS LEAVING ON "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"
LSC member RICK STARBARD is trying to get it put on the agenda for the upcoming LSC meeting that a vote be taken on whether or not to join some other school districts in signing a petition asking for a waiver to "No Child Left Behind".
There seems to be a swelling tide in the literature against NCLB. It seems the business of education has gotten in the way of learning, not to mention teaching.
